As J.D. Vance left the stage Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention, I recognized the music they were playing.
It was an instrumental version of the song “Don’t Stop”, made famous by Fleetwood Mac in 1977. It was written and sung by the Mac’s Christine McVie, who died two years at at 79 years of age.
Fifteen years later, it was played at the 1992 Democratic Convention and became the theme song for the forward-looking Bill Clinton campaign.
Apparently it is now a song for the backward-looking, as it is now 47 years old. As far as its meaning goes, Trump’s campaigns have always seemed oblivious to the meaning of the music they have used.
