The headline of this diary says it all. On paper, there has never been a worse candidate for President of the United States than Donald Trump: Convicted felon, rapist, instigator of insurrection, supports Project 2025 and a fascist future for America, responsible for overturning Roe v Wade, anti-LGBTQ rights, disparages key strategic allies and openly supports adversaries who threaten global stability, routinely calls for violence, mocks the disabled, openly disparages veterans and those serving in our armed forces, multiple bankruptcies, exceedingly low approval ratings, etc.
Yet, he is once again the Republican nominee for President. At no time have there have been calls within his party for him to withdraw because of his most recent convictions. In fact, just the opposite. The entire Republican Party machine, Republican politicians, former Never-Trumpers, including Nikki Haley and his own running mate, have circled the wagons, compromised whatever decency and principles they may have once had, and resolutely and unflinchingly embraced Trump. They could have abandoned him, but because they haven’t, Trump now has at least a 50/50 chance of being elected and ending the democratic experiment that has been the United States for 248 years.
In contrast, a significant number of Democrats, including some high profile elected officials, major donors, some celebrities, and people here at DKos, continue to panic and call for Biden to withdraw because he had a bad debate and continues to make the same kinds of gaffs he’s made his entire career, and the same kinds of gaffs DJT routinely makes. At this late stage in the game, the only thing these calls for his withdrawal are accomplishing is to prevent the Biden campaign from giving 100% focus to getting their message out in the next 110 days to undecided Independents, potentially persuadable non-MAGA Republicans, and uninspired Dems who are considering not voting at all, about the genuine threat Trump is to democracy and the manifold stellar accomplishments of this administration over the past three years that have improved their lives.
Republicans have shown that if you marshal your resources and throw your full, unwavering, and unequivocal support for your candidate — whoever that may be, seemingly fatal flaws and all, IT DOESN’T MATTER.
Here in Los Angeles back in 2021, a former California state assemblyman and president of the state senate, and current City Councilman, Kevin de Leon, was caught on tape, along another City Council member, the president of the City Council, and president of the local Federation of Labor, saying some patently racist shit. The public and press rightfully howled for everyone to resign. Martinez heeded the call, and Cedillo lost his re-election bid a few months later in 2022.
Kevin de Leon, however, has held firm, despite a recall attempt and the continued outcry for his resignation. He is up for re-election and has made it through the primary to the general election in November. People have a very short memory, and he now has a very real chance to get re-elected. Too bad Al Franken didn’t follow the same strategy.
The moral of this diary: THE WORRIES STIRRED UP IN THE MEDIA AFTER JOE BIDEN’S DEBATE PERFORMANCE WILL BECOME MEANINGLESS IF EVERYONE RALLIES BEHIND JOE AND KAMALA WITH 100% UNWAVERING VIGOR AND PASSION, JUST LIKE THE REPUBLICANS HAVE DONE WITH TRUMP. THE PRIMARY PROCESS CHOSE SCRAPPY SCRANTON JOE AND KICK-ASS KAMALA AS OUR DEMOCRATIC NOMINEES FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT AND THEY WILL WIN IN NOVEMBER AS LONG AS WE AND EVERY DEMOCRAT AT THE LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVEL THROWS OUR WHOLE-HEARTED SUPPORT BEHIND THEM WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY, RIGHT NOW!
If we don’t, this may very well cause us to lose the WH and our Democracy, and we will have proven ourselves to be the weak-kneed simps the Republicans say we are.
