I do get the joke/meme about writing a “strongly worded letter.” But sometimes it’s all you got.
So since there still seems to be an unbelievable amount of contention about this, here is the “strongly worded letter” I sent to Congressman Earl Blumenauer. I’m doing this to add whatever logical weight I can to the case for not dumping Biden, because I really do not see any winning logic to trying to replace him:
Dear Congressman Blumenauer,
I was horrified to learn that you have publicly advocated replacing Joe Biden as 2024 Democratic candidate for President. Surely you must understand that if either Biden or Harris is replaced, uncertainty and misogyny will rule the day, and Democrats and democracy will lose.
When we vote for Joe Biden, we are voting not for just one person but for an entire administration, and the Biden Administration is a crack team of dedicated individuals that has done a record number of good things for a record number of people in the last three years. Tell voters about that. Don’t join in irresponsible speculation about neurologist visits to the White House and echo inappropriate and insupportable inferences. You have been a progressive Congressman whose work in Congress I have supported for decades; you should be ashamed of yourself for turning your back on this man who has helped bring us so much. Yes, his gaffés while speaking are regrettable, but have no effect on his empathy and political savvy. And should his second term be cut short for any reason, Harris has amply proven herself capable of the job, and the rest of his team would still be there doing their good deeds.
We must be able to vote for and return Joe Biden to the White House. Anybody but Harris would be a long shot and fracture the Democratic vote, and you know darn well that Harris would be too long a shot on her own; I wish it weren’t so, and I do what I can to make it not so, but there it is. Yet without Harris, many Black and women voters might just not vote, and not voting is the same as voting for the opposition. We cannot have the opposition anywhere near the White House.
You (yes, Earl, you) must help counter the ignorance and lies irresponsibly advanced by such rags as The New York Times and The Washington Post. Tout and shout the accomplishments of the Biden Administration — in which you have assisted — from the rooftops of the country, and rally relentlessly to support the team who brought it to us! At the same time, of course, it is also necessary for you and your Democratic colleagues to relentlessly counter the sickening sycophancy toward T***p shown by the aforementioned so-called newspapers, which are failing utterly in their civic duty to inform voters how bad T***p really is and how evil another T***p presidential term would actually be. So that is your job; I’ll do my bit, but you’re the one with the public platform. Don’t say things that disparage and damage Democrats — it’s that simple.
Even the welcome relief of two Democratic Congressional majorities would not be enough to stay the horrors a second T***p administration would unleash on your fellow citizens. We must support Joe Biden —today and tomorrow, tirelessly and ruthlessly through November 5,2024.
Thank you.
I just sent paper copies to his Portland and Washington, DC offices, as well as by email on his official web page, so I do not have a response from him yet.
