Super quick diary here, folks.
I’ve been a vocal critic of Jennifer Rubin in the past. I’m still wary of long-term trust, but I’m more than willing to gratefully credit former opponents who are now aiming where I’m aiming — as in this case.
In this tweet, Ms. Rubin nails it:
For the non-Xweeters (and bless y’all, truly), here’s a transcript:
CNN and other broadcasts have reached a new low in RNC coverage, fawning over “unity” and “young Vance” — ignoring we are seeing a fascist party overflowing with criminals plot the downfall of America, a VP who is the single most radical and unqualified in history. No pushback on lack of information about Trump’s injury. It’s access journalism at its worst. It’s not the media we need to defend democracy.
Chef’s kiss, no notes.
In related news (ahem, irony), I’m reading that Joy Reid noted on her show, we’ve received more information about Pres. Biden’s COVID diagnosis than we have… about Trump’s injury. Now that’s curious, wouldn’t you say?
Here’s another segment featuring Jen Rubin with insightful commentary.
Here’s another worthwhile article from Dan Froomkin at PressWatch. It’s a quick read, so please check it out in full, but here’s a key excerpt.
Two days after getting shot in the ear, Trump quickly turned around and defined his idea of unity: Dismissing all the indictments against him. And that same day, Biden shook off NBC anchor Lester Holt’s implication that his rhetoric might be too hot. “How do you talk about the threat to democracy, which is real, when a president says things like he says?” Biden asked. “Do you just not say anything ’cause it may incite somebody?”
There is no such thing as unity in American politics today. The only way Republicans want to unify the country is under Trump as paramount leader, with absolute and unchecked power to reshape the government and the lives of its citizens.
And by that standard, the Republican National Convention has been a roaring success. As Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Will Bunch wrote on Thursday, its central theme was “The deification of Donald J. Trump.” No more, no less.
Rather than meander off into the other current hot DK topic, I’ll just say — folks, note the media’s behavior here. “Not all,” sure. Not every single talking head. But the trend is unmistakable. They clearly have a favorite team, and they’re playing for that team.
This isn’t one team working the refs. (That’s bad enough, but this is worse.) This is some significant number of the refs being firmly in one team’s corner.
This is why there desperately needs to be a liberal voice on the national political stage too. The daylight between conservative outlets and mainstream outlets seems like it’s narrowing by the day.
Hang in there, y’all.
Thanks for reading, and good luck.
