I am not predicting here that President Biden will choose to withdraw from the race. But the given the increasing number of stories (this one just broke: Pelosi has told House Democrats that Biden may soon be persuaded to exit race), I am predicting that IF he does choose to do so, he will do it at a moment of maximum advantage for the Democrats and maximum disadvantage to Trump.
That could mean he’ll do it tonight, right after Trump finishes speaking. This will step all over Trump’s speech and draw attention away from the Republicans.
However, he could delay his announcement (if he has one to make) if, having watched Trump slither and slime his way across the stage tonight, he decides that it’s better to let the media focus on Trump’s gaffes and fumbles and general obnoxiousness. Two problems with that, of course: Trump is capable of holding it together some of the time, and the media just will not report on Trump’s decline and the outrageous things he says and does.
And, again IF he chooses to withdraw, he will NOT resign from the presidency. Presidents do not resign (except Nixon, to escape being convicted on impeachment). He has a lot of work still to do, and he can argue that this way he can do what’s best for the country — and it also leaves Harris free to devote all her time to the campaign. (And yes, it will be Harris if it is not Biden.)
