Apples for Three
If you’ve got a situation on your hands, being goaded and provoked, a basic guideline is not to say, “I don’t want to fight.” Mostly say nothing, unless asked — and then just be yourself. Sure maybe you’re going to knock the guy flat and hit him, maybe twice, with whatever’s handy. He’s thinking he’s got a free sucker punch — but never say, “I don’t want to fight.”

Bolly leaned against a tree, he had an apple. He wanted to peel it, but knew better than to bring out his knife. He decided to not even take a bite. He turned it around in his hand, looking off at nothing. Two strangers were talking to him, both looked big, but he wasn’t bothered. New shoes and clean hands.
”You gonna eat that apple or what?” So there was the challenge. It seemed as though he were going to offer the apple to the challenger, but he dropped it, looking down he took a step back.
Not so big and not big at all would be fine.

Later on, when he’d found a quiet hollow near a little bit of a creek, sitting by a gentle fire, glowing embers in a circle of stones, admiring his new shoes — look at us, he mused, unaccustomed to such finery. A good fit. He took off his hat and thought…plenty of apples in here, enough for three — and got out his knife. Whittled a stick. Peeled apples roasted. The fire crackled.
