Before I get started let me say up front that I don't hate religion. I'm all for others practicing such. Especially if it helps them cope with this crazy world we live in. God bless them I say. But.....When their religious practice calls for making me one of them - or at least making me subservient to their rules - I gotta say that's not gonna happen without some really serious pushback. I'm not religious. And as far as I'm concerned the flying spaghetti monster is just as possible as their God. So, practice your religion as a personal matter and more power to you. But keep it off my windshield. And with increasing frequency, you're just throwing that stuff on me. Lets get down to the facts.
Gallup notes that about 22% of our country is Catholic and a near equal amount of our country (21%) professes no organized religion. Yet Catholics rule us with an Iron fist. All 6 republican justices on the SC are Catholic. 67% of the SC is Catholic (Republican side) while 22% of our population is Catholic. Think that does not matter? SC vote to overturn Roe was 5-4 with 5 of the 6 republican catholic judges in the majority. SC vote to overturn Chevron was 6-3 with all 6 republican catholic judges in the majority. SC vote providing immunity to Trump for his crimes was 6-3 with all 6 republican catholic judges in the majority. SC vote allowing Christians to refuse LBGTQ customers using public business was 6-3. All catholic majority. Seeing a pattern here?
The Chevron ruling overturned 40 years of government stability. The agencies in our government rule the day to day activities they are responsible for. EPA rules on the Environment. FDA on Food. Etc. No More. Our Catholic SC now says that the courts are the final say in anything any government department wants to enforce. With, of course, the Catholic SC sitting at the head of that table with the ability to overrule any lower court.
The SC also gave Trump wide immunity in all official acts of office whether or not he committed crimes during those acts. And gave a "presumptive" immunity to any other action. Meaning the courts again get to decide if a presumptive immunity applies in any situation. With, again, the SC sitting at the head of that table and able to override the rulings of any lower court.
Roe being overturned we already know about. But not all of us kept track of the state reactions to it.
Of the top 10 Christian states in this country (Rand) based on the percent of Christian residents in the state, 7 of them have total abortion bans with very limited exceptions and 2 of them have 6 week bans. So much for leaving Abortion up to the states. I think the SC meant leave it up to the Bible.
You might have forgotten about the evangelical Christian web designer who refused to create web sites for LBGTQ. Naturally our Catholic court sided with the web designer. And in the process gave us a ruling that says not all rights are equal. Specifically the rights of a Christian web designer operating in a public space outweigh those of an LBGTQ customer in that same space. Nice huh?
Finally, lets get to a couple of states. Those laboratory settings for the application of Democracy. Louisiana (a top 10 Christian state) just mandated that the 10 commandments have to be clearly present in every schoolroom. Meanwhile Oklahoma (Another top 10 Christian state) mandated that the Catholic Bible has to be present in every classroom and that the bible must be taught to all students. And you know these cases are going to the SC. And you know that Catholic court is going to uphold the Christian rights of those two states over the American rights given to all of us in the constitution.
Meanwhile Justice Thomas continues to rake in millions in bribes for his judicial votes and Alito is probably flying flags upside down somewhere. It's time to stand up to this folks. A small minority of our population has created an all powerful SC which will rule in Christian glory over the vast majority of us. And also created a presidency that can do whatever it wants with no fear of running afoul of any law - but is ultimately controlled by that very same Catholic SC. This is inexcusable for our American Democracy. We far outnumber these people. We can vote them out of our existence and send them back to a reality where they quietly practice their religion in private.
VOTE. Or get really used to kneeling.
