Last week we had an Uber driver in Washington DC who said he liked Trump. Here were his reasons:
1. He was from Ghana and resented people who didn't come to this country legally like he did.
2. During the Trump administration he made more money.
3. He didn't care about Trump's criminality because in Ghana everyone in government is corrupt and
misogynistic, so that's just part of what he expects.
4. He liked a strong outspoken leader even if he didn't agree with all his opinions.
5. He didn't think that everything Trump said should be taken seriously because pandering and lying is just what politicians do.
6. He liked it when Trump tweeted in the middle of the night because he had something entertaining to
look forward to when he got up in the morning.
There was no time and no point to try to refute everything that is obviously off-base with this guy’s
political leader selection criteria. We didn’t bother, and no one should. You can’t fix stupid.
What struck me is how well that Trump voter outlined the shallowness and misguided self-interest that
most likely motivates all Trump voters. He was clearly unabashed by his own compromised values and
indifference to the plight of others, not to mention basic democratic principles.
So is it any wonder that this guy let us out a block and a half from our destination?
Seems like a cautionary tale to me:
Select a leader for all the wrong reasons and we will never get to where we need to go.
