On June 30 I sent the following letter to President Biden although it was a painful thing to do. If he remains the nominee I will work for his reelection, continue to support him financially, and vote for him as we absolutely must not reelect Donald Trump. But we need to follow the course of action that will give the best chance of defeating him.
Dear President Biden:
I am writing to ask you to put country above your own personal desires at this critical time for democracy and withdraw from the campaign for reelection.
It is very painful to make this request as you have served admirably since your election in 2020. I have deeply appreciated your service even at the few times when I disagreed with you. I worked hard for your election in 2020 and have contributed financially both to your first campaign and now.
However, as an 83-year-old, and a retired researcher on cognitive decline, I had major reservations about your decision to run for a second term. These were vastly amplified by the June 25 debate. The debate strategy of Gish Gallop that Trump used would be extremely difficult for the very best debaters to counter.
The post-debate revelations that your advisors have been seeing signs of your gradual decline in mental sharpness over the past 1½ to 2 years are highly concerning to me. Given the demands of the office of the President and the stresses of the extraordinary times in which we live, it is no wonder that you would experience some acceleration of the aging process.
The normal aging process in one’s 80’s is not conducive to maintaining full sharpness under the best of conditions. No matter what your abilities are now, they will decline throughout the next several years and the burdens of the Presidency will exacerbate that. However, the times demand a fully functional President.
It is imperative that our party nominate the candidate with the absolute best likelihood of defeating the despicable Donald Trump.
At present, I do not believe that you are that person, though it hurts my heart to say that. We must have a younger nominee!
Again, please put country above your personal interests and step aside. Keep your legacy intact!
Sincerely,
Nancy B. Munro, PhD
