It’s time to face facts — this election is about one issue. Not abortion. Not race. Not the economy.
The 2024 Presidential Election is about beating Donald J. Trump and preventing him from reclaiming the powers of the Presidency in this country.
The reason for this is simple — the modern Republican Party is the greatest threat that America has ever faced.
So it brings me absolutely no joy to say that the best person to accomplish beating Trump is not the incumbent President, Joe Biden.
Make no mistake, President Biden’s term has been significant. He has accomplished a great deal and deserves to be celebrated. That’s why he should willingly step aside.
This isn’t about him deserving to go out on his own terms. I should hope by now that everyone recognizes how much harm was done by affording that privilege to Ruth Bader Ginsburg because she wanted the first female President to appoint her successor.
My text message to the heavens: Ruth, you fucked up and we are all paying for it.
President Biden, don’t make us say the same thing about you. Put your ego aside and do what is right for both your country and your party.
And for those of you whining about why we’re not making noise about Trump dropping out — it’s because we’re Democrats, and not the authoritarian personality cult that calls itself the GOP today. We should not lower ourselves to the standard set by Republicans. We are better than them, God damn it, and we should expect more out of our candidates.
I’ve been disenchanted with the Democratic Party for a long time — and it’s probably a big part of the reason I’ve taken a seven-year break from this website. In a fractured party, there seem to be so many factions with their own agendas — and unfortunately, none of them include playing to win.
We snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with the best of them. I’d love to see the Democrats once again nominate a candidate I’d be proud to vote for rather than put someone else up there who I’ll tolerate enough to stop the Republican. I don’t have much faith in that happening.
Make no mistake about it, I’ll vote straight ticket Democrat in November. Even if the guy on top is an accomplished old man who should probably have his car keys taken away. But if we lose, and make no mistake that is a definite possibility, we will once again have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory because we haven’t figured out how to get out of our own way.
If this country is worth fighting for — and Trump and the Republicans are the threat to humanity we know they are — then the focus needs to shift away from pet causes and on to winning and winning big. Period. Even if that means our personal cause takes a back seat.
By stepping aside now, the President can take a well-deserved victory lap while giving the next Democratic President a fighting chance.
