Less than one month after Freddie Gray died following his arrest by the Baltimore Police Department, and just one week after six officers were arrested for assault, manslaughter, and second-degree murder in his death, Attorney General Loretta Lynch has announced that the Department of Justice will be formally investigating the Baltimore Police Department for patterns and practices of violence and discrimination.
The investigation will begin immediately and will focus on whether or not Baltimore Police engage in excessive violence, discriminatory stops, and more. Lynch communicated that the new investigation will not only focus on whether or not officers have violated Baltimore policies, but violated the constitution or the civil rights of men and women throughout the city.
More details are forthcoming.
