Welcome back to the all new Daily, Nightly, Late Night Thread.
Tonight’s guest on The Daily Show is Jon Stewart. The panelists on The Nightly Show are Jon Glaser, Mike Yard, and Rory Albanese.
Jon Stewart
is an American comedian, writer, producer, director, actor, media critic, and former television host. From 1999 to 2015, he was the host of The Daily Show, a satirical news program that airs on Comedy Central.
Stewart started as a stand-up comedian, but branched into television as host of Short Attention Span Theater for Comedy Central. He went on to host his own show on MTV, called The Jon Stewart Show, and then hosted another show on MTV called You Wrote It, You Watch It. He has also had several film roles as an actor, but has done few cinematic projects since becoming the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central in early 1999. He is also a writer and co-executive producer of the show. After Stewart joined, The Daily Show steadily gained popularity and critical acclaim, and his work won 22 Primetime Emmy Awards.
He is on tonight to talk about the The James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act
The James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act, signed into law by President Obama in early 2011, establishes the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program. It ensures that those affected by 9/11 continue to receive monitoring and treatment services for 9/11-related health problems through at least 2015.
The WTC Health Program consists of a Responder Program (for rescue and recovery workers, including more than 15,000 New York City firefighters) and a Survivor Program (for those who lived, worked or went to school in lower Manhattan on 9/11). Services also are available for responders to the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA sites also attacked by 9/11 terrorists. People eligible can receive services, no matter where they live now in the US.
On October 1, the World Trade Center Health Program expired. The legislation helped pay for the medical costs of 9/11 first responders; hundreds have already died from illnesses stemming from the awful things they had to inhale at Ground Zero in the years since September 11, 2001.
The legislation still hasn't been renewed, and New York legislators have been busy trying to rally their colleagues to pass a long-term extension of the law so those at the mercy of Congress don't have to worry about their health care disappearing every few years. However, there aren't many chances to renew the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act — named after a first responder who died in 2006 — before the year ends. There's the omnibus spending bill — the one that needs to pass if we're going to avoid a shutdown — or a tax-breaks extension.
The bill's supporters originally wanted the 9/11 benefits to be tucked into the recently passed transportation bill, but that didn't work. Democrats blamed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for its exclusion, while congressional Republicans say that everyone wants the legislation to pass by the end of the year — it just didn't belong in a bill about highway funding. House Speaker Paul Ryan told NBC News last week, "We have not decided what vehicle it will be or what funding level but it is something we do intend to get done by the end of the year."
I look forward to the interview, it is always good to see Jon again and this is an issue he is very passionate about.
