Dr. Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist and a big proponent of popularizing science. About five years ago he sat on panel discussing science and its importance in the future of our human race. In the clip below, Dr. Kaku begins by explaining that the biggest obstacle for the United States is its scientific education, as a whole.
The United States has the worst educational system known to science. Our graduates routinely compete at the level of third world countries.
But, Michio Kaku makes a very important point.
Well, how come the scientific establishment of the United States doesn’t collapse? If we’re producing a generation of ‘dummies’, if the ‘stupid’ index of America keeps rising every year—just watch network television, reality shows, right?—how come the scientific establishment of the United States doesn’t collapse?
That is a good question.
Let me tell you something. America has a secret weapon. That secret weapon is the H1B. Without the H1B the scientific establishment of this country would collapse! Forget about Google. Forget about Silicon Valley, there would be no Silicon Valley without the H1B.
The H1B is our work visa program that needs reform, but should not be abolished. Kaku goes on to explain that ridding us of the H1B program, not reforming it to keep talented minds as citizens, will only destroy our country. It is as true now as it was then, and with these elections coming up the need to reform the H1B program in a progressive direction—versus the conservative alternative which is dominated by isolationist thinking—is more important now than ever before.
