Welcome to the twenty-third entry in our Backyard Science “Alphabet” series. Today’s Bucket is brought to you by the letter “W”.
Willet (Tringa semipalmata) — Santa Rosa Island, FL
Wisteria (probably Wisteria sinensis) — Philadelphia, PA
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum) aka Webworm — Ridley Creek SP, PA
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the woods. Picked more for showing how well the brown coats fade into the woods than clearly showing the deer.
More below the fold. “W” has lots of candidate entries.
White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) — on the march in Basel, Switzerland
From my limited experience wagtails struck me as sort of being like catbirds or mockingbirds are in North America.
Groundhog (Marmota monax) aka Woodchuck — John Heinz NWR, PA
This one was grazing instead of chucking wood.
Winterberry (Ilex verticillata), a holly native to the eastern US — Philadelphia, PA
Winter hazel (Corylopsis pauciflora) — Philadelphia, PA
Female Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) — John Heinz NWR, PA
Whorled Tickseed (Coreopsis verticillata) — John Heinz NWR, PA
Also could have been a “V” candidate.
Wasp
Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) — John Heinz NWR, PA
Eurasian Widgeon (Anas penelope) — Basel, Switzerland
Weeping Cherry (Prunus spachiana) — Philadelphia, PA
Right Whale (skeleton) — Museum of the Earth, Ithaca, NY
Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) — Rush, NY
Black-throated blue warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) — John Heinz NWR, PA
Our catch-all entry for warblers in general. I expect the butterbutt will get some love in the comments.
Wind — New Hope, PA
“It’s a wise crow that knows which way the camel points”
American white ibis (Eudocimus albus) — Wilmington, NC
Waterfowl (here a mix of Mallard ducks and Canada geese)— Delaware River, PA
Wild Strawberry — Stid Hill, NY
Milkweed — a stand-in for the “weed” group in general.
“Western”, “Wild”, “White”, and “Winter” alone set up a lot of candidates. I also did not have good photos available to cover “willow” and a number of others as well.
