From the beginning of this miserable partial government shutdown, now in day 30, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been AWOL insisting that it's between the Democrats and the Russian asset in the Oval Office and has nothing to do with him. He has said repeatedly that he will not bring a vote to the floor unless Democrats have agreed to it and Trump will sign it. McConnell, being McConnell, lied.
Some time this week, likely Thursday, the Senate will vote on the proposal Trump "negotiated" with his son-in-law and his favorite white supremacist employee and "announced" on Saturday. They will have this vote because Trump told McConnell to do it. To add add a McConnavellian twist to the deal, it will include $12.7 billion in disaster aid as well as government funding for the rest of the year. And of course the $5.7 billion for the wall.
McConnell's intent, as describe by Politico which is practically slathering for a Dems in disarray narrative, is to "force Democrats to vote against bipartisan funding levels, aid for disaster-hit communities and an extension of the Violence Against Women Act, according to a summary of the Senate plan, obtained by POLITICO." That's because McConnell can't do anything without adding a dose of poison for Democrats. He's not doing what Democrats have insisted, having the vote to set the government employee hostages free by funding their jobs first.
Because he won't release hostages.
Of course this isn't a good faith move by McConnell to find and end to this shutdown. McConnell is constitutionally incapable of acting in good faith because he has none. When it fails he'll come to the floor and lament the partisanship of the Democrats. Because that's also who he is. Open the dictionary to the entry for hypocrite and insert his image.
However, that he and Trump have gotten to the point of recognizing something has to happen on the floor of the Senate suggest that he's feeling some pressure. Right now, pressure on McConnell coming up from his Republican conference is the best weapon we've got.
Call your Republican senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them to reopen government. Don't stop until this is over.
