On Tuesday morning, Donald Trump pulled out a phrase he’s used before to describe the persecution he believes he’s suffering. On Twitter, he said that the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry was a lynching.
That’s not just racially charged—that’s racist. While some may argue about whether or not Trump used the word intentionally, it’s entirely reasonable to suggest that he knows exactly what he’s doing. In the past, Trump has called the investigation a fraud and a witch hunt. Trump’s word choices are too specific to be coincidental or poor judgment.
It’s not the first time Trump has tweeted the word “lynching.” Back in 2016, he retweeted a statement that described his treatment from the media as a “disgusting lynching.”
Twitter is dropping some real truths, and getting deep into the nuance.
Some people have argued that the media should “let this go,” saying that Trump (as a child does) is lashing out for attention. Whether the president wants this to be a diversion or not, it’s still important to directly call out this racist language.
Democratic representatives have weighed in, too:
So did Lindsey Graham! Shocking no one, but disappointing everyone:
