I spent the last couple of days in April and the first week of May in the hospital with a terrible case of pneumonia. Back before I had a double valve replacement surgery, pneumonia was something I got relatively often and for which I was occasionally hospitalized. This was the first time in roughly 14 years I had to experience it again. Thankfully, unlike in the past, I wasn’t sick enough to be put in the ICU. Still, it wasn't fun especially spending the first few days sharing a room designed for one person. Must have been something leftover from when Covid was forcing lots of changes to how hospitals were rooming patients. Luckily, my roommate and I got along pretty well even if we had completely different sleeping habits.
Towards the end of my stay, I was getting very little information from much of the staff because the pulmonologists seeing me kept asking why I wasn’t being discharged as once I was off the IV antibiotics, there wasn’t anything they were doing for me in the hospital I couldn't do for myself at home. After prodding a number of nurses, someone came to tell me they were waiting to get approval for me to have a portable oxygen concentrator since that was the one piece of equipment I did not already own. Once I received that last Tuesday, they were able to begin the process of discharging me.
Now I am on the long, arduous process of recovering my lung strength which might take a couple of months. I had a good follow up visit with my pulmonologist showing a clear chest x-ray. I also feel more inspired to eat better and spend more time on exercising including a more regular gym schedule. I have a few trips planned this summer including a destination birthday for myself which will bring together friends and family so I need to be well by then.
Hope you all are doing well!
