Oklahoma seems to have pulled into a lead over Louisiana. This is the headline from CNN.
Oklahoma state superintendent announces all schools must incorporate the Bible and the Ten Commandments in curriculums
Incorporate sounds like a nice neutral word. But wait. It gets less neutral. For one thing, what ever this is, it is effective immediately. This is because Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters believes that Bible is “one of the most foundational documents used for the Constitution and the birth of our country.” Wait what?
SO VERY NOT TRUE. The founders were pretty clear on how to keep religion and government separate.
Walters also believes that “the Bible is a necessary historical document to teach our kids about the history of this country, to have a complete understanding of Western civilization, to have an understanding of the basis of our legal system.” I will let the more religious reader discuss how the Bible might/should not have much to do with our legal system.
CNN is reporting that “ Walters said every classroom in the state must have a Bible and all teachers must teach from the Bible in the classroom.” My bolding. This is much more than Louisiana I think.
But this is only a memorandum. So maybe, hopefully, it, or Walters will go away.
