The now proverbial 'Deplorables' have always been among us -- the racists, xenophobes, misogynists, anti-Semites, the haters and the bigots. The ignorant who can be easily persuaded to vote for the liar demagogue who promises he'll eliminate and exterminate their enemies and then their lives will be magically better. We see them now because their lord and master has emboldened them, given them permission to express their hatred openly and is trying to normalize all these savage, inhuman impulses. They deserve our anger and disgust and revulsion, but they remain hopeless, unreachable. There will be no reasoning with them.
Then there are those who are simply uninformed, at this point blithely ignoring what's happening and believing this is just an election between two somewhat unappealing people -- but hey, the tribalism of partisan loyalty is enough for them to go along with it, to vote for the liar demagogue while telling themselves he's just being outrageous, that he doesn't mean the things he's been saying his entire life. That he won't actually do all the terrible things he's promised to do starting on day one of his presidency. They deserve a small amount of pity, but mostly what they deserve is disdain and criticism. Maybe these can be saved from themselves, like the women and LGBT Republicans who willfully ignore which party gave them their civil rights and which has as its actual platform proposals to take all of them away. It may be a mistake to put much faith in hoping they'll be any help to the rest of us with sanity and accurate information in this particular election. Still, we should try anyway, because maybe a few can be reached, as these patriotic Republicans here were.
Then there are the cretinous, self-absorbed and self-indulgent fools who think a vote for Johnson or Stein is the way to make their displeasure with the current system known. And there is truly despicable lot who would actually welcome the looming catastrophe of a Trump presidency. Delusional, ignorant idiots who believe their pseudo-utopian cause would automatically, magically replace Trumpism as they choke on ashes of the nation once known as America. A transformation which would be contrary to every single prior example in human history when an authoritarian dictator seized control of a powerful nation.
But finally, in the end, there are the men and women who should know better and who I am positive do know better, but have chosen to hitch their wagons to the demented, rabid apocalyptic horses of the racist, xenophobic, misogynistic bigot demagogue, the would-be fascist dictator who knows nothing and lies about almost literally everything. The ones who KNOW goddamned well that Donald J Trump is unwell, unfit, and astonishingly unqualified for any elected office, not even dog-catcher.
I'm talking about Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. Marco Rubio, Chris Christie and Ted Cruz. Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dan Quayle. Orrin Hatch and Rand Paul and Kelly Ayotte. The list goes on and on, but if you want to see the full litany of shame, here is the list of Republican leaders who have endorsed Trump, the now self-declared enemies of America whether they admit it or not.
Remember these names. Remember that they have decided to throw their lot in with a man who behaves constantly like an unhinged lunatic. The menace to America itself -- and they won't just stand idly by if it comes to pass. These aren't the ones who put on the swastika armbands and join the party because failing to do so would bring retribution. These are the ones already standing in line for their pins and uniforms. The ones who believe in Trump. Who do not believe in any of the laws and rights supposedly enshrined in our Constitution.
The men and women who are endorsing mass arrests and deportations. The suspension of our Constitution. The open and proud commission of war crimes. The embrace of racism and authoritarian rule. The first use of nuclear weapons and wars started over rude gestures.
The men and women who now embrace and endorse the very notion that truth itself does not matter. That not contributing to America's government makes one 'smart' and that billionaires shouldn't have to pay taxes at all. Who witness the horror and revulsion of the whole world as the rest of the human race wonders if we Americans have lost our goddamned collective minds.
Who are handing matches to the arsonist who has promised to burn down America itself in the pursuit of making it 'great again' -- with the Constitution as his tinder.
I do believe Trump will lose in November. Not by nearly as much as I would otherwise hope, but he's alienated too many people who are now furious and who have had enough of his lies, his bigotry, and his insane rants.
However, afterwards, this isn't just something we can get over, a rift to be 'healed.' This is a gaping wound in the very soul of America itself that needs major surgery. Trump's supporters will remain. Even worse, the political party that enabled him to become this danger -- the Republican party, sometimes known as the GOP, which in bygone days used to stand for the Grand Old Party -- will remain. The traitors and quislings and opportunists and crooks within the Republican party will remain.
We must not forget them. We must never allow them to put America itself in such grievous danger again. We must never stand by and let them elect their candidates and re-elect their incumbents, for by allowing Trump to be nominated -- and in many of those cases, doing far worse by endorsing this madman -- every one of these scoundrels, these fiends, should be turned out of office. We must not allow there to come a day when someone exactly like Trump, only a more competent demagogue, is allowed by the Republican party to come so close to the single most powerful elected office on this planet.
The Republican party itself should be hounded into oblivion after this, and every member in it, should they fail to purge from among themselves all these truly, willfully deplorable men and women.
Support for and assent to Trump's candidacy should be a badge of shame for the rest of their forsaken lives. Never forget who stood behind him. Never forget.
In closing... it's 9 minutes long, but worth every second.
