Good riddance.

From WaPo:

The head of the Drug Enforcement Administration is expected to resign soon, according to U.S. officials, following revelations about “sex parties” involving prostitutes overseas and other misconduct among its agents.

Michele Leonhart, who has served at the helm of the DEA since 2007, has come under heavy criticism on Capitol Hill since an inspector general report last month documented a series of episodes in which agents hired prostitutes. Agents were also found to have had sex parties with some women hired by drug cartels in Colombia.

[snip]

“After over a decade of serving in top leadership positions at DEA, Administrator Leonhart has been woefully unable to change or positively influence the pervasive ‘good old boy’ culture that exists throughout the agency,” the committee said in a statement. “From her testimony, it is clear that she lacks the authority and will to make the tough decisions required to hold those accountable who compromise national security and bring disgrace to their position.”

GWB appointee Michele Leonhart, career DEA agent turned DEA chief, has been a pain in ass for years. She is of the outdated drug warrior mold who have been putting young people in prison, most for non-violent drug offenses, for decades. She has been trying desperately to continue the drug war even while Obama and Holder have been shifting toward harm reduction policies and away from incarceration policies.

Leonhart has been butting heads with Obama and Holder for awhile now, and now they've told her to hit the road after her DEA agents were caught with cartel-funded prostitutes.

From Wikipedia::

In 2011, the Washington Post reported that "994 people younger than 18 were killed in drug-related violence between late 2006 and late 2010" and that "[i]n 2009, the last year for which there is data, 1,180 children were killed, half in shootings." In response to these statistics, Leonhart declared that while it "may seem contradictory, the unfortunate level of violence is a sign of success in the fight against drugs.”

In 2014, Leonhart openly criticized President Barack Obama's stance on cannabis at a meeting of the National Sheriffs' Association.[11] Marijuana activists and two congressmen have called for her resignation due to her stance on cannabis while some law enforcement leaders have defended her position.

She's also just plain weird in her vapid attempts at making an argument against cannabis legalization. (But what can you expect from a GWB appointee?) Same wikipedia entry.
She also alleged that dog owners should oppose marijuana legalization due to edible products toxicity to animals. However, one study that examined 125 Colorado dogs who had contracted marijuana toxicosis between 2005 and 2010 found that only two dogs died as a result of ingesting marijuana edibles.

I hope the new DEA chief fires the entire DEA force, removes fascist, unconstitutional, invasive programs, and implements a more Constitutional, harm reduction-oriented agency.

The Koch network of liars and paid hacks have been caught lying their asses off in Florida. Cold busted. The Koch network of petrochemical industry protecting astroturfers, basically a bunch of industry hacks pretending to be free market protectors, have been utterly exposed in Florida, by conservatives no less.

A Florida effort to expand access to solar power has become a face-off between two factions of the conservative movement.

The group Conservatives for Energy Freedom is blasting Americans for Prosperity for what it called a "campaign of deception" against a ballot initiative that would make it easier for businesses and individuals to install rooftop solar energy. Conservatives for Energy Freedom, along with the state group Floridians for Solar Choice and a number of other organizations from across the political spectrum, have been working to gather enough signatures to get a measure on the November 2016 ballot that would allow direct sale of solar power to consumers.

The ballot measure has gathered wide-ranging support, from national groups like the Tea Party Network and the Christian Coalition; in-state conservative groups like the Libertarian Party of Florida and the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida; environmental groups like the Sierra Club's Florida chapter and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy; and business groups like the Florida Retail Federation.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

The article goes on to explain how the Kochs are claiming government support blah blah blah but as is clearly shown, Florida just wants to be able to get past the energy monopoly in Florida and buy solar directly. Apparently, Florida is one of 5 states that only allow power purchases from power companies. And the fake "free market" Koch network wants to protect that. They are exposed as liars and hypocrites BY CONSERVATIVES. I smell a coup brewing in the Republican party.

The research, from the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, measured the exposure of the mothers to PAH air pollution and used brain imaging to look at the effects on their children’s brains.

PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are widespread pollutants formed when organic materials are incompletely burned. They originate from vehicle exhausts, burning coal and oil, waste incineration, and wildfires. They can also be found inside the home, for example from tobacco smoke or open fires and stoves.

The study found an association of areas of reduced white matter with the processing speed of that part of the brain. Yellow, red and orange show areas where white matter had affected the processing speed of that part of the brain. There was a stronger correlation in the left side of the brain. From Peterson et al. 2015, JAMA Psychiatry, Author provided
This study’s findings add to a growing body of literature on air pollution and health, from which other studies report associations with autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia and cognitive impairment.

Wow China, Brazil and India. What are you going to do about that? Being the factory countries of the world? At what cost to your future? What amount of permanent genetic mutations for your future generations....

Wow rural conservatives in America who drink the Teahadi koolaid provided by the Koch climate liars? Look at the evil you leave behind you in the world as you thump your Bibles, tsk tsk.

Courtesy of Dana Milbank. We now have new Bushisms. Terrifyingly enough, we could have Jeb Bush as president. He could possibly be more stupid than his clueless brother GW Bush 43.

Sorry if this was already discussed. I need to save for myself for posterity.

My favorites are...

"nucular"
and
A top priority, he explained, is “reforming a broken immigration system and turning it into an economic — catalytic converter for sustained economic growth.”
It's hard to use big words like "catalyst".... and it's hard....
“to put food on your family.”
This speech was clearly a catalytic converter ... er catalyst... for yet another Bush family candidacy, that is if you subscribe to child-like, Palinesque level of discourse in your world leaders. No wonder Barbara Bush was so embarassed for Jeb to run.

The rest of the world may ask: is America so backward that we elect dipshits like dumb and dumber to run the United States of America? Grown men who can hardly speak?! Clearly, based on GWB 43, the answer is yes. We got torture, mass war, and economic collapse from these GOP clowns.

“I don’t know what the effect has been, because, you know, it’s really kind of hard to be out on the road, and I’m just a gladiator these days, so I don’t follow every little detail.”
“As we grow our presence by growing our ability to produce oil and gas,” Bush went on, “we also make it possible to lessen the dependency that Russia now has on top of Europe.”
“I don’t have a solution. I mean, I—I—I’ve read articles, you know, about whether the 1915 kind of breakout of the Middle East and how that no longer is a viable deal.”
He touted a Latin American free-trade agreement and noted that “where Columba and I live is going to be right in the center of the universe of that free-trade agreement.”
And of course it's not a Republican speech without a "tighten the noose" reference when discussing brown people.

Murica you see.

The dinosaur hoax

by gnosticator

We at CADministry et al (I being et al) know that dinosaurs were really dragons. Just look at the komodo dragons that are still with us! Stop forcing my kid to read about dinosaurs at school. Show me the evidence! Carbon dating? pffft.

As our leader says...

CADministry
“Something needs to be done,” she continued. “The science behind them is pretty flimsy, and I for one do not want my children being taught lies. Did you know that nobody had even heard of dinosaurs before the 1800s, when they were invented by curio-hungry Victorians?”
Exactly. Around when church authorities stopped dealing with such "scientists".... I know I'm not supposed to say it but I can't wait until church authority is brought back.

Yes this is true...

CADministry wrote, for example, that dinosaurs “lack family values,” and by way of demonstration, recounted an instance at her “children’s school, [in which] several children were left in tears after one of their classmates (who had evidently been exposed to dinosaurs) became bestially-minded and ran around the classroom roaring and pretending to be a dinosaur. Then he bit three children on the face.”
Satan be gone!

And if your relatives try to force dinosaurs on you? Some scientist loving relative....

“foolishly gave my two youngest some dinosaur toys for Christmas. After telling her to get out of my house, I burnt the dinosaurs. My children were delighted because they know that dinosaurs are evil. I am fortunate that my family has been very supportive, and has disowned my children’s former aunt.”
Come on. I know you scientist-loving hippies will rec me up so this comes up in google searches for "dinosaur hoax"....

Erick Erickson, dipshit, has assumed the role of chief Thought Policeman.

These people don't even have a foothold in reality, much less even consider "reality-based" reporting or editorializing, when they vomit their word salad onto society. We live in 1984 fascist state where, in the conservative alternative universe, civil rights activists are terrorists while the FBI is out hunting for a likely conservative domestic terrorist in Colorado.

And these scumbags do this only days after the domestic terrorist attack in America and another in France.

The conservatives have completely jumped the Orwellian shark at this point. Fox news telling blatant lies, Congress passing bills with Orwellian names, like the "Patriot Act", Republicans starting massive wars for their political donors, etc.

Erick Erickson Compares American Gay Activists To Charlie Hebdo Terrorists

RedState editor Erick Erickson took advantage of the deadly terror attack on satirical French newspaper Charlie Hebdo Wednesday to slam American gay activists he blamed for the dismissal of Atlanta's fire chief.

"They believe that the views they want to silence are not worthy of ever being spoken…and so they must be punished, they must be vanquished, and everyone must know it's going to happen to them as well," Erickson said on his radio show, appearing to barrel toward a denunciation of the Paris attackers.

"And so they did the only thing they could do, the only thing they knew to do," he continued. "They went to the mayor of Atlanta and demanded he fire the chief of the fire department for daring to mock them." [snip]

In a blog post also published Wednesday, Erickson made the comparison explicit. "The terrorists did what had to be done to publicly destroy and ruin the offender...and the terrorists won in Atlanta," he wrote.

Meanwhile...
FBI says NAACP explosion in Colorado Springs could be domestic terrorism

"It is certainly a possibility of being a hate crime or domestic terrorism, however we are exploring all possibilities of potential motive," said Amy Sanders, spokeswoman for the FBI in Denver.

Jeff Dorschner, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Colorado, said an assistant U.S. attorney with expertise in "both terrorism-related matters and matters related to destructive devices" is supporting the investigation and working with the FBI.

Erick Erickson is having a pouty sad. But this type of rhetoric serves a dangerous purpose.

America has been at this dangerous point in American politics where one side is calling political opponents "terrorists" while committing terrorist attacks against their political opponents for a long time. These conservatives are deranged but Erick Erickson obfuscates and lies to such an extent that the real domestic terrorists run amok, and their terrorist attack barely makes a ripple in American news media.

Americans should stand up for the NAACP in the same way France is protesting for Charlie Hebdo.

But Fox News has dehumanized America to such an extent that only Oklahoma City sized bombings make the news. And even then, the FBI isn't allowed to mention conservative domestic terrorists as a major concern.

The Koch-funded Republicans are scampering around trying to figure out how to get out of their problem with Steve Scalise. As someone in previous diary said, and not to be eliminationist or dehumanizing like Republicans like to do, but the image of roaches being exposed to light with their lair exposed, it's quite a valid comparison to conservatives being exposed here on racism.

The scandal over Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise’s 2002 speech to a white supremacist group has so badly damaged his image inside the House Republican Conference that he faces serious questions over his political future, according to interviews with multiple aides and lawmakers — including some Scalise allies.
No. Scalise, a Republican leader who said he's David Duke "without the baggage" isn't who is badly damaged. It is the Republican party and their decrepit masses of racist dinosaurs who are badly damaged politically here.
Democrats, for their part, are working to craft a sustained attack against the Louisiana Republican, using Scalise’s continued role in the leadership to launch broadsides against dozens of rank-and-file GOP lawmakers.

Yes. The evil that is the modern conservative movement should be attacked at every level until they are exposed for the pox on humanity that they are. They are leading the planet to a certain doom unless they are stopped.

And yes conservatives can be compared to the racist Nazis. I don't care what anyone says. It's fucking true. Their genocide is just slow and quiet, just look at the drug war horrors: mass incarceration, prison torture that happens every day in American prisons, for-profit prisons, police industry, the horrors in Mexico etc for proof of that. They did all that with able assist from complicit, sellout Democratic politicians. Don't tell me those policies, or this vile racism, doesn't compare to Nazi Germany because we all know it does.

Hyperloop, the ultra-fast tube transport dreamed up by SpaceX founder and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, could be ready for passengers in as few as 10 years.

In a 76-page report released on Dropbox on Thursday, a new startup called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies laid out plans for building Musk's futuristic transportation system, which could cut travel time between Los Angeles and San Francisco down to 35 minutes. The trip takes up to 12 hours by Amtrak train, and more than six hours by car.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

Just how fast would the Hyperloop transportation system envisioned by entrepreneur Elon Musk have to be? Try more than twice as fast as the fastest commercial train in the world.

On Monday, Musk unveiled details about what he called a highly speculative project. But, when the guy speculating has already sent private rockets into outer space, you can't count him out.

Musk believes the Hyperloop, with giant vacuum-like tubes and an air-bearing suspension system, could ferry riders from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 35 minutes.

That's a roughly 350-mile trip, meaning the futuristic capsules would be zipping along at almost 700 mph -- faster than most commercial airliners and slightly less than the speed of sound.

Perhaps this COULD happen. If Republicans and Democrats would stop being so absolutely corrupted by campaign donations and have a little vision.

Certainly this was diaried earlier in the day but this story is so horrific I have to say something if only for myself.

A 14-year-old, Mehran Khan, said about 400 students were in the hall when the gunmen broke through the doors and started shooting. They shot one of the teachers in the head and then set her on fire and shouted "God is great!" as she screamed, added Khan, who survived by playing dead.

From there, they went to classrooms and other parts of the school.

"Their sole purpose, it seems, was to kill those innocent kids. That's what they did," Bajwa said. Of the 141 people slain before government troops ended the assault eight hours later, 132 were children and nine were staff members. Another 121 students and three staff members were wounded.

Condolences to the families in Pakistan. Maybe this will be a turning point in the fight against religious extremists' involvement in government. Maybe the people of the world will see what most religions have done historically: incite mass violence.

I'll let founding father Thomas Jefferson speak truth to power.

“On the dogmas of religion, as distinguished from moral principles, all mankind, from the beginning of the world to this day, have been quarreling, fighting, burning and torturing one another, for abstractions unintelligible to themselves and to all others, and absolutely beyond the comprehension of the human mind. Were I to enter on that arena, I should only add an unit to the number of Bedlamites.” — To Carey, 1816: N. Y. Pub Lib., MS, IV, 409

“It is too late in the day for men of sincerity to pretend they believe in the Platonic mysticisms that three are one, and one is three; and yet that the one is not three, and the three are not one . . . But this constitutes the craft, the power and the profit of the priests. Sweep away their gossamer fabrics of factitious religion, and they would catch no more flies. We should all then, like the Quakers, live without an order of priests, moralize for ourselves, follow the oracle of conscience, and say nothing about what no man can understand, nor therefore believe.” — To John Adams, 1813

“Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus.” — To Van der Kemp, 1816

“Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of God; because if there be one he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.” —To Peter Carr, 1787

Reason. Humans have been trained to avoid that. Science has been deemed bad by these people. School itself.

Sadly and patheticly mankind has been led down the path of evil by snake oil salesmen.

Most Democrats in Congress appear to have decided that Democratic voters have nowhere else to go.

With the cluelessness of the average American, the helplessness of the average Democratic Party voter from the depravity of their corrupted representatives, and with safe gerrymandered districts protecting these corrupted tools of Wall Street, ya'll can just fuck off, say Democrats in Congress.

We can and we will suck up to our corporate donors, these shameless fucks say.

Yes we will force Americans to subsidize Wall Street derivatives.

No you will not cock block Wall Street money from our campaigns.

Yes yes send out the Progressive politicos to sooth them....

Bank lobbyists have been pushing the provision for several days, earning the ire of bank-reform-minded Democrats including Sen. Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee.

Those objections hit critical mass late Monday, as word spread on Capitol Hill that Democratic negotiators had agreed to a bid from House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) that would effectively subsidize much of the derivatives business.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) blasted the proposal in a written statement provided to HuffPost.

"Rolling back derivatives rules in Dodd-Frank would be reckless," Warren said. "Middle class families are still paying a heavy price for the decisions to weaken the financial cops, leaving Wall Street free to load up on risk. Congress should not chip away at important reforms that protect taxpayers and make our economy safer."

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) told HuffPost the proposal is "a good example of capitalism's death wish."

Time to launch the Real Democratic Party.
