Online sources I've found suggest that Joe Wilson (R-SC) has a son who also fancies a career in South Carolina politics. The following is from Wiki:
His oldest son Alan McCrory Wilson is also a lawyer, working as an assistant Attorney General,[citation needed] and a Major in the Army National Guard, having served a year as an intelligence officer in southern Iraq. He is currently running of the Republican nomination for the South Carolina State Attorney General in 2010.
Perhaps folks on line have ideas about small ways to make noise in THAT campaign?

I realize that the Repunks have forgotten the President's Inauguration Speech finale - if they even paid attention in the first place. I edited it down the the last 2 minutes of President Obama's Call to Service here - for several reasons, listed below the fold ...
I attended this candidate's forum last Sunday thinking that I'd see one the progressives I'd been reading about on the net and find them a great alternative to the experienced political folks in the race. I was so wrong, very sad, really.
Here's a news clip from WGN of the debate held in Chicago last Sunday at DePaul U. It's pretty superficial - but I agree with they're main point. Of the 11 candidates on platform, only the 3 experienced politicians (Sara Feigenholtz, Mike Quigley, John Fritchey) belonged on the stage.

The first (and possibly only) public forum for voters to see all to folks who are trying to win Rahm Emanual's IL-05 US House seat has been scheduled. This Candidates' Forum looks to have 15 candidates attending, though we'll see if everyone turns up. There is no slated democrat candidate in this primary and a lot of money is being raised. There are also several folk completely new to the scene in the race - so - let the games begin!
This opinion piece from today's SF Chronicle is a great example of the cruelty and shortsightedness of the Repunks neo-con philosophy. In brief, Schwarzenegger wants to cut off funding for home care assistance in Cali. That's cruel and shortsighted.
Fairly or unfairly, one of the oft cited measures of the value and staying power of a president are memorable phrases plucked from his inauguration speech(es). Today's speech seems riddled with phrases to may well live on in the public memory. But part of what makes a phrase "sticky" is the amount of "press" it gets. Since this is one of the new "press-like" venues, I thought I'd take a poll of some to phrases you all think are most memorable from the speech. I'm only going to be able to list a few - so if I miss your favorite, please add it in the comments.
I share my favorite and an explanation below the fold ...
Poll 27 votes Show Results Best phrase from Obama's first inauguration speech? Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint. For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and 27 votes Vote Now! The race begins in earnest next Monday (1/12/09) when signatures can begin to be collected in support of candidates for this office. Looks like a fun week in my 'hood!
The IL-05 Special election to replace Rahm Emanuel is detail in this web article. It still seems that "The Chicago Machine" has NOT picked a candidate". This is good for the district and the democratic process generally. The link also leads readers to some candidate's websites.

Chicago workers are having to sit in on the floor of the plant they have worked at and helped build just to get the company and the Bailed Out Bank of America to follow the law. Can shooting workers in the street and breadlines be far behind?

By now we've all read of Rahm Emanuel's intention to vacate Illinois' 5th Congressional district. A long line of Chicago political insiders are busy bargaining behind the scenes to pick a successor in good, old fashioned Chicago fashion, exchanging political favors for support. One of them has already come to this blog searching for support. As a decade-long resident of IL-05, I guess I should not be surprised be this most undemocratic of processes. IL-05 was, after all the "political possession" of the infamous Rep. Dan Rostenkowski and Gov. Blagojevich. So far though, not much has been said about actual people like me, who live in the 5th - or of the tremendous opportunity this special election presents to progressives - if we can get organized.
