Update: Not stuck. Officials have determined that the runway is indeed long enough for the 747 to take off later today...somewhere over the rainbow. HT jsfox. Thanks.

Once the sun comes up in Kansas, this is going to be fun to watch. You see, the runway is long enough to land this plane, but way too short for it to take off. Stuck!

The office of Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) ~~had an orgasm today~~ confirmed today that the Department of Homeland Security has chosen Manhattan, Kansas (home of Kansas State University, 2 hours west of Kansas City, 2 hours north of Wichita, and 2 hours south of Lincoln, NE) to be the site of a $451 million lab designed to study diseases that are transmittable between animals and humans.

Despite his removal as Sec of Defense, Rumsfeld will be speaking at Kansas State University (Manhattan, Kansas) today at 11:00 a.m. central. He has several engagements including the renaming of the Military Science Building in honor of Richard Myers, a K-State alum who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001-2005.

A webcast will be available when the "lecture" begins.

Rumsfeld Public Lecture

The media is reporting that over 600 tickets still remain and it's bound to be a very friendly audience as thousands of soldiers from Ft. Riley will be in attendance. Richard Myers is also a very favorite son at Kansas State. I expect the red carpet to be laid despite Rumsfeld's resignation.

My intern is attending the lecture and I'll post updates and reactions this afternoon.

School Board Rejects New Kansas Science Standards

This article in the K-State Collegian hasn't seem to make it outside of Central Kansas. My local school board, newly filled with some great, progressive thinkers, recently rejected the new science standards passed by the Kansas State Board of Education in November. You may recall that the standards allowed non-natural explanations of natural phenomena.

Here's my favorite quote from one of the school board members:

"I think what has us all concerned is when we look at the state standards, there is a door that opens toward Intelligent Design," board member Beth Tatarko said. "You watch presentations, you listen to the speakers, you really press them on the issue, and it is about religion."

While the vote is mostly symbolic, it is evidence that there are Kansans who are rational and progressive. Face it; I need all the evidence I can find to keep living here.

King George visits Kansas

George W. (and company) is visiting Kansas State University today. They announced it last Wednesday with the following allotment of tickets:

6,000 K-State students
1,500 K-State staff and faculty
1,000 Military (800 from Fort Riley and 200 ROTC)
400 Landon patrons
300 special guests,
200 media and press

All the student tickets were gone in a day, but by the end of Friday, they still had about 200 faculty tickets left.
With these numbers and the diversity of the student body (really), it's not like they can control the audience like I've heard reported at other events.

The local peace and justice group has a demonstration planned that my wife and son are joining. I'll post later with any update on festivities. (And any interesting stories.)
