In 2006, the Kerry-Feingold-Boxer-Leahy amendment failed, but would have called for immediate troop reduction with a one-year time table for complete withdrawl from Iraq.

It appears Feingold cannot be stopped and will try again. Hopefully, this time more senators will support him - particularly interesting will be whether the sitting senators running in 08 who voted against it last year will vote for it this year.

From the little I've gleaned this blog tends to lean a lot more toward Giuliani than the GOP as a whole so i don't know if it makes them more sane or not. However, there is some interesting analysis some of which the lefty blogosphere agrees with I think....

End of Year Prediction: Edwards will be Democratic Nominee
With just hours to go until 2007 is ushered in here in the east, I am prepared to put my credibility on the line as a political seer and make the following prediction more than a year out from the Iowa caucuses. I hereby predict that, at the end of the day, former North Carolina senator and former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards will be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2008.

Having followed the Lamont/Lieberman campaign and doing my part to contribute online, my pressbot-radar just went off being an Edwards supporter as well. The meme of Edwards is a millionaire is being revived - no not from his first campaign, but from the Lamont is a multimillionaire meme.

Edwards, after all did pretty well in the last democratic primary and was the VP candidate, so I thought the fact that he was one of the most successful trial attorneys EVER and was also "rich" was not news. Particularly because his wealth hasn't changed much while he was in the senate. If Edwards wanted to make more money he could have just remained one of the most successful trial attorneys with the largest award in NC ever.

Jesus H. Christ is running in the democratic primary for 2008 as the democratic nominee and here is why he simply can't win.

His name is very eccentric. In some places it's pronounced "hey-zeus". It sounds foreign. Plus no one knows what the "H" in his middle name stands for. American's simply won't vote for a weird name. Who knows the "H" could even stand for some moslem sounding name like "Hussein".

He is very polarizing. Lot's of people love him, but billions hate him and think he is leading the infidels. Billions of others really just don't care about him - many thinking he doesn't really matter anymore.

He is not a fresh face. The media love's fresh faces, like that cult around the corner that started last year. Jesus has been around for a long time already. Give the MSM something new. The media is looking for the new Jesus Christ.

One of his platform issues is poverty and helping those less fortunate than him. Come on, what an unexciting platform. The poor don't vote and the poor can't make campaign contributions. Poverty is simply not a winning issue. The multinationals will not support Jesus.

he is taking on McCain already. Equating increasing troops in Iraq as the McCain doctrine. Very nice - as Borat would say. Someone in his campaign must read the blogs.

Normally on this festive occasion I might let this Diary go for another day. However, I am still confused over the Main Stream Media's fascination and presumed coronation of Hillary as the DemocratIC nominee.
When I read comments like these, they get my attention.

Although Clinton commands considerable support among likely Democratic primary voters, she struggles in general election match-ups, according to the poll. If the contest were held today, both Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani would prevail over Clinton. Obama, in contrast, would eke out a slight win over both Republican candidates. Former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards is neck-and-neck with the Republicans.

"There are a lot of independents. These are the same people who loathe Bush, loathe the Iraq war," said Del Ali, president of Research 2000, the Maryland-based nonpartisan polling firm that conducted the poll for the Monitor last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. "But deep down, they don't like Hillary Clinton."

The Edwards campaign is clearly going to place a lot more emphasis on both the Web and grassroots than I suspect the other front running campaigns will. For quite a while it has been noted that Elizabeth Edwards has posted on blogs occasionally and I think the Edwards Webisodes are another attempt to let everyone have as much access to the candidate as possible.

from a poor NY Times reporter about the timing of John Edwards' announcement that he is running for president. By now this story is several days old, most of us saw it on "the blogs" first and now there is some story (which I will not pay to read) in the NY Times about it.

What's most interesting to me is the feelings of the reporter about what he thinks about John Edwards' announcement.

More perplexing, at least from a conventional point of view, is why Mr. Edwards would announce his candidacy in the last week of the year, a dead time for news, when it can be hard to win voters’ attention.

No quotes of campaign experts, just an attribution to convention. Since when do reporters report feelings without quoting someone?

This is more like an OP-Ed

Unconventional announcements are conventional for Mr. Edwards. In 2004, he made his announcement on Jan. 2. That, of course, didn’t work out so well for him. ADAM NAGOURNEY

I was sort of getting used to not hearing about any other democratic candidates in the primary.... Hillary vs. Obama - is the narrative: young and charismatic versus the money machine and Bill's wife is the story the dinosaur media is telling us.

I began to feel a kindred spirit with Clark, and Richardson fans. After all the ONLY confirmed 08 presidential candidate is Vilsack and he never gets mentioned. If the media is using PAC establishment as a criterion for talking about 08 candidates than all of them have PACs.

However, to my surprise they actually talked about John Edwards. Maybe leading the polls in the first caucas state does count for something. Maybe that obscure wallstreet/MSNBC poll showing Edwards beating McCain counted? Or maybe they were just waiting for the leaked announcement that Edwards would announce after the Holidays.... Sadly the network was FOXNEWS. Maybe they are reading their own GOPer blogs saying that Hillary as the frontrunner was a fox created myth spread by other networks.

Maybe Clark should pre-announce an announcement (if he's running) to get MSM attention.

Yep, John Edwards was in New Orleans for spring break this year with 700 co-eds.

However not for what you think. They were pitching in to bring attention to the slow pace of recovery in NOLA and help out.

700 college kids gave up their spring break to help clean up the lower ninth.

I think the choice of NOLA to announce a run for the presidency is awesome on so many levels. It's the right thing to bring attention to why a competent government with integrity is important, and politically is spot on given Edwards' message. I think the timing, while unusual, is good too. Hillary and Obama are occupying all the media air space and this will serve both to get Edwards some more attention and gets in front of the other candidates and may make their announcements seem less profound. (Unless Hillary announces from behind the green zone in Iraq.)

Anyhow, the contrast of Bush going to a prestine part of NOLA at night with lights will be a stark contrast to Edwards' announcement, which if I have to guess will be in the daylight in a severely still damaged area.

I don't really have that much to say, but perhaps the Kossacks can fill me in on why post-katrina - trying to help
get New Orleans back up, reminding the people of Katrina etc... -- why isn't the 2008 convention going to be held in New Orleans.

It seems like a fun place and one that could get the prestige and money the DNC needs to committ to a location.

Apparently, Colorado may not make it because they can't raise enough money to have it there.

Why not the big easy? Apparently Colorado also has union issues. Politically I would think a 2008 presidential contender would want to remind people of Katrina and the GOP management of government.
