My son-in-law is currently serving his second deployment - this time in Iraq. His son, my beloved grandson, is living near us with our equally-beloved daughter. We are so lucky that we have them close to us. My SIL, however, does not have the joy of watching his 2-year old son succeed and fail at potty training. Okay, maybe that's a bad example. It's kind of messy sometimes.
But think of all he'll be missing during this year. The sounds of the little parrot, as he mimics us with his early sentences. The fun of watching him play in the water on these hot summer days. That lower lip that juts out when the pouting starts.
So many fathers are missing their children today. Please, in their honor, consider contributing to Netroots for the Troops. It's easy. It's fast. And it sends a strong message to the fathers in our armed services that we know the sacrifices they make every day - not just on Father's Day.
And because it's only right - remember the mothers who are wishing they could wish their husbands a happy Father's Day in person today too.
