Recently San Diego mother to be, Terri James, was fired from the Christian college where she was a financial aid specialist, because she became pregnant, which was evidence of her premarital sexual activity. Premarital sex was forbidden by the moral pledge she signed when she was hired, but the pledge did not specify that she faced termination if she deviated. Firing her for becoming pregnant is obviously discriminatory because only women can display the physical evidence of sexual activity, thus are usually the only ones who are stigmatized for such behavior. It is also illegal to fire someone for being pregnant under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978. The school also offered a job to her boyfriend after making the decision to fire her, whom they must have assumed was also non-virginal (he didn’t take it). However, the biggest problem roots and stems from the very existence of religiously run schools and their “moral codes” for staff and students.

President Barack Obama has declared in Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address that he shall be pushing for a significant increase in the federal minimum wage, a change which has long been overdue. Right now the minimum wage is not nearly a living wage, but a poverty wage. Congress has only approved a raise in the federal minimum wage three times in the last three decades. Now the federal minimum is stagnant at $7.25 an hour. That amounts to a grand total of $15,080 a year (about 1,256 a month) if you work 40 hours every week with no sick days or vacation time. That is not nearly enough for even one person to afford rent, food, utilities, gas, car insurance, and other necessary daily expenditures.

The LGBTQ community deserves absolute support in their pursuit for social and legal equality, and it is utterly ridiculous that we are still arguing about gay marriage, such a thing should be common sense by now. There is no logical reason why two consenting adults should not be able to do anything they like with each other, including get married. The gender or sex of the people involved is no one’s business and is of no consequence to anyone outside of that marriage. This is not just a matter of gay rights; it is a matter of civil rights and personal freedoms.

There is great news for animal advocates out there. The European Union has announced that they have passed legislation that will effectively ban of the sale, import, or manufacture of any and all cosmetics that have been tested on animals. The ban is set to take effect starting March 11 of 2013. Anyone who wants to sell cosmetics, including toiletries such as toothpaste, deodorant, and soap, in Europe must ensure that there are no ingredients anywhere in the product that have been tested on animals. This is a HUGE breakthrough for animal rights activists and, of course, the animals we fight to protect.

No democratic legislation int his country has ever called for a ban on all guns; rather we call for gun CONTROL. We need tighter gun control in this country and the reasons should be obvious. How many innocent children have to die before the access to deadly weapons becomes more difficult? I hope the recent tragedies in Aurora, Colorado and Newtown, CT bring to light the importance of gun control reform. Gun control is not a threat to our freedom, and it can save thousands of lives. This is my opinion piece that I couple with my research article "Guns In America".

I am but a shadow in a realm of chaos...a floating phantom barely seen by the general populace. I am torn, for I wish solitude and secrecy within my own personal life, yet also desire to be seen and have my ideas heard throughout the world in the hopes that they may inspire betterment in some fashion. I have never quite understood what is so difficult about maintaining goodness as a common social norm. Why are human beings so uniquely drawn toward corrupt and destructive behavior? Is it perhaps our complexity that causes our confusion about morality? Perhaps simply being human is too much for some souls to bear. Why can we not all be rational and understanding and respectful? Why do the definitions of words like logic and reason seem to be completely different to some? For instance, I believe it is illogical, inhumane and irrational to kill murderers as capital punishment. Death is much too serious a matter to be used as a regulated form of punishment. Such a consequence is rarely a deterrent for those that are eager and willing to kill. The act of premeditatedly ending someone’s life against their will is, in fact, murder, and the guilt of those executed does not justify capital punishment. What of all the innocent lives that have been destroyed? Those that were later proven innocent cannot be given back their lives. Old methods and laws of our history cannot be used as a shield against modern wisdom and logic.

Since the dawn of humanity, man, as a whole (not each individual), has sought to dominate over the female of the species. First he used his superior size and strength to physically bully women and weaker men into submission, and later used his established authority and power over other men to do so. Men even created religion, in part, to justify masculine domination, in asserting that even the all-powerful creator of the universe is male, and made women to be subjugated by men. For thousands of years women have been divided, and conquered into the oppressed majority. This paradigm is the result of men’s fear, and men’s lust for power and control over everything.

One of my most treasured values is my love of learning. Learning is something that impacts nearly every facet of my existence every day. I am constantly learning new things, or expounding on existing knowledge. Even when I am not learning, I am applying skills or knowledge, even if it is just a logic problem in a puzzle book, in order to exercise my mind. Without my drive and desire to learn I would have never started gardening, writing, painting, drawing, making my own jewelry, crafts, baking, or any of my other hobbies and art forms. Learning new information, such as history and social science is vital to our evolution as a civilization. We must learn from our past, our societal flaws, and our behavior in order to become a better functioning society. The individuals that ignore or resist learning opportunities become mentally atrophied.

The theory of the Hierarchy of Needs is a chart system used to describe our psychological needs and desires, and the priorities of those needs. The theory was formulated by Dr. Abraham Maslow, a highly respected twentieth century psychologist who primarily studied human personality and behavior. Maslow’s hierarchy asserted that our needs come in levels, and that baser needs must be met before there is any motivation to pursue higher needs and desires. Maslow’s research regarding the hierarchy of needs can easily apply to the conditions of individuals and families living in poverty. Poverty is a perfect demonstration of how needs can go unmet, disallowing one’s personal ascension up the hierarchy to higher motivations. Poverty not only affects and endangers individuals, but it is also a disservice to communities, and to our potential to become a greater global civilization.

On Real Time with Bill Maher a while ago (9-7-2012) Bill Had guest starring on his show the aesthetically lovely but mentally delusional Christine O’Donnell. I have decided to critique this particular episode, focusing on Christine’s guest appearance, because the lies Christine was trying to present to Bill in their debate are quintessential of the propaganda and distortions of reality that currently run rampant within the Republican Party. I have heard these fallacies from the radical right too many times and for too long now, and it is time to call attention to the truth.
