It’d be great if people would STOP telling Bernie Sanders what he should or shouldn’t do. Sanders doesn’t need the council of strangers on how he should feel… and for keyrists sake, stop warning him of the vast chasm of impending bitterness… the darkness of doom and how he’s going to destroy the republic if he doesn’t concede right this minute. By the way, wasn’t the role of Destroyer reserved for Donal Trump? Or do we point that at ANYBODY we perceive isn’t on “our side” and tell them their actions will destroy EVERYTHING.
First off, that destroyer meme: it’s bullshit. Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders can’t compete with Exxon Mobil. It would take them years to do what Monsanto et al have done to our food and pollinators. I mean It took George Bush at least 4 years before he destabilized the entire fucking world via the Middle East route. And it only took Barack Obama a few moments into his presidency before he asked us to turn the page on Bush and his illegal war. Talk about bitter . . . but this isn’t about that. Directly.
This is about Bernie Sanders giving his word to his supporters and to the rest of America: he would take this campaign to the convention in Philadelphia. And damn, turns out Sanders is a man of his word. Now Democrats can threaten to marginalize him; take him off committees, turn him into a leper in the Senate. I really don’t think it would phase him. And seriously: this isn’t about speaking truth to power at the convention; it is the beginning of bringing power to heel.
Let me repeat that: this movement is about bringing power to heel.
Now, let’s talk unity? Let’s discuss issues. Banning fracking, criminal investigations of bankers and brokers and Exxon Mobil; DOJ special unit to investigate EVERY death at the hands of police or while in their custody and every documented report of brutality. GET THE GUNS out of our public spaces. Stop pesticide use, and investigate all industrial farming; LOW interest college loans without interest or finance charges until graduation (we can go from there); access to health care as a right (and nobody goes bankrupt from bills). Like that. Oh, and no more war, like Obama’s latest small war initiative where we are at war all over the place and can send in our special operations forces simply because we say TERRORIST.
Seriously. The words Iran and war slip out of anybody’s mouth in Washington, we must act like a tidal wave to remove them from office. Ditto for the TPP and TiSA.
But hold on: I bet there are a few of you who trust Obama’s total endorsement of this so-called global trade agreement. That would NOT be meet with unity from me or, I’d venture to say most of those supporting Sanders vision. So let’s just be honest: we don’t even know how many of us agree on the issues, much less an agenda or the priorities of issues on that agenda...
….yet the battle cry rings out: UNIFY. We MUST unify. I don’t know, it seems a little vague to me… as vague a throw-away term as CHANGE. Unity is meaningless unless we know upon what it is built. This may be because, apparently, Democrat doesn’t mean the same thing anymore… we had a big tent because everybody had their own issues… but I think we shared the same values. These last years, we Democrats seem to have split over our values. It’s hard to have unity when we question each other’s values.
So, yeah. I’d love to work together. But I’m going for pie-in-the-sky. I’m not going to support Clinton supporters or anyone in Washington who continues to beat the war drums and stoke up fears of “others” while we allow our own country to be one of the actors destroying and terrorizing the world.
We need to unify over saving the planet and we all need to do our part.
You want unity? Then we talk to our neighbors about NOT using poisons in their yards or in their homes… and ask them to let the weeds grow (some of those early bloomers are the first drink for many nectar seeking insects, especially bees). Car pool. Stop eating fish. Cut way back on meat. Shop local and use cash. Bank local. Show up at town committee meetings; let the police know they answer to a civil authority. Ask our local restaurants to STOP using plastic straws and stirs (as a start).
That’s what Bernie’s vision, our vision, is about... Those things. Improving our behaviors, changing how we spend our money, how we regain power by localizing/regionalizing economies. No more cheap. Bernie, imo, was transformed by through these last months… he’s not the same guy he started out being. I think he clearly understands we must start to operate OUTSIDE of the current rotting system. If we are to save ourselves.
No. Seriously. You WANT change? or do you want a better world? Take care of your home, your family, be kind. But for crying OUT loud, please stop telling Sanders what he should do and how he should feel.
