Is the inevitable going to happen sooner rather than later? Steve Schmidt, a key architect of John McCain's presidential campaign is calling for the GOP to support same-sex marriage at a meeting with Log Cabin Republicans today, according to CNN.
Among his remarks (which were obviously leaked to CNN), is this gem:
"It cannot be argued that marriage between people of the same sex is un American or threatens the rights of others. On the contrary, it seems to me that denying two consenting adults of the same sex the right to form a lawful union that is protected and respected by the state denies them two of the most basic natural rights affirmed in the preamble of our Declaration of Independence — liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
When the Republicans start supporting same-sex marriage, you know there's been a dramatic shift. After Iowa, Vermont -- and even a step forward in Washington state -- perhaps the winds of change are really coming after all.
