There was
an interesting article in today's
Detroit Free Press. A survey of public opinion by the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations shows that most Americans want a lot more global cooperation than even John Kerry proposes. (Statistics below the fold...)
The survey asked several questions about various foreign policy and global cooperation related issues, and many were very widely supported:
- 66% Favor working with the UN even when it adopts policies that the US doesn't like.
- 59% Favor getting rid of all UN security council vetoes, including ours.
- 74% Want a standing UN peacekeeping force commanded by the UN, not the US.
- 76% Support the International Criminal Court.
- 71% Support the Kyoto accords.
- 87% Support the ban on nuclear testing.
- 80% Support the treaty banning landmines.
- 68% Say UN approval should be required before the US takes any military action against North Korea.
- 74% Believe American allies should have a veto over such an action.
The Bush administration believes that the small but noisy minority, which fears the "New World Order" of the UN is more important than the silent majority that want substantial cooperation with the world community - far more than even John Kerry would propose.
