I received a Christmas card today, not unusual for this time of year. But this card made me cry. It's from my counsin's daughter. She's serving her country in Iraq -- her ticket to higher education.
Bobbie Blue, her family nick name, sent me a poem. It's a Christmas greeting that made me cry.
It's below the fold.
There is no snow on the desert sand
The palm trees still grow green
In Iraq it is the rainy season and
Our uniforms are never clean.
During attacks from mortar rounds
The sound of giants walk the Earth
Another attack, the siren sounds
my gear almost doubles my girth.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
was once written for soldiers like me
no cookies, lights, or franeincense
No carloers, no Christmas tree.
So remember me in Christmas spirit
I'll be a couple of weeks too late
'Cuz I'll be thinking of and wishing you
A merry Christmas from Abu Ghurayb.
**************
To all our brave ones so far from home
Some no more then children
Say a prayer, light a candle,
Mail a phone card,
And may the new year find them safely home.
