There are some lines I thought even the Bush campaign wouldn't cross, but I guess I was wrong.
I really, really hope this is satire or disinformation, but The Hill is usually a decent source.
The HIll on plans for GOP Convention
The Hill reports that the Bush/Cheney campaign is planning to make quite a TV extravaganza of the NYC convention, breaking all pretense of it being fundamentally a big meeting in hall. Possibly they will not even have a podium ("theater in the round"), and they will program convention events at other telegenic locales in the city.
The article suggests that Bush might be nominated from the USS Intrepid (old aircraft carrier now docked near the Garden), with a Marine band playing the national anthem.
But then there is this. Citing an unnamed senior GOP source:
"Or, and this is a real possibility, we could see President Bush giving his acceptance speech at Ground Zero," [the GOP source] added.
Acceptance speech at Ground Zero? I don't even know what to say. I'll leave it to others less tired than me to spew the appropriate outrage.
Kudos to Wonkette for the cite.
