Some Weekend frivolity ...
Call this the "Ode to Theoria" ... Yes, don't we all get "Pissed as Shit"? I do. And I find it happening more and more frequently, and more venemously. I don't necessarily like it, but can you blame me? Sometimes, the world sucks ass. However, at least there's an outlet -- a sanctuary: music.
(feel free to skip right to the list, but first, here's the prose)
I'm one of these mixed-tape-makers, a la "High Fidelity." Over the years, I've tended to make one per year, normally being a snapshot of the kind of music I was listening to that year, or new stuff I bought. Occasionally, I also make themed mixes.
These days, "mixes" can contain literally hundreds of songs, because you can fit that many MP3s on a CD and play it in the car. Back then, in the olden days, you were limited to 100-minute tapes at best.
What I've done is created the "Pissed as Shit" mix. But before I get to that, I'll let you know that I've also listed my old 16-song Pissed Off mix, made in 1991, reflecting a time right around the first Gulf War when a multitude of forces (including that war) were contributing to me being pissed, dazed and confused - and generally changing my worldview quite a bit. The mix I came up with then is reflected below. I have left it intact, in all its cheesy glory. The first side is really a "fit of rage." Side 2 then becomes more wistful, apparently because I am a natural optimist at heart. Or was.
Before ridiculing me, remember that I was too young for the first wave of punk, and was raised on 80's metal (which I'll defend any time, but this is not the place). And please remember, the first list represents a time just before the great rock and roll revival of 1991-95 occured. But I have bolded the ones that would fit in quite nicely with the new list.
Anyway ... This seemed like an appropriate time to update that list. So here is my brand new Double-Album "Pissed as Shit ... Fuck the World" Soundtrack. A brand-spanking new list of 32 songs, much more aggressive than before. 13 years later, I am simply more flat-out pissed off, for some of the same reasons, and some different. There is probably less optimism, or perhaps more realism, of the plight. And therefore, less wistfulness. This list kicks harder ass. It's stuff that's good to listen to when I really need to release the bile.
This list was not easy to make. I had to leave out a lot of songs that I love, even ones that really kick ass, because they simply didn't fit the theme. To fit in, the music had to be aggressive and fast, for the most part, and the lyrics had to work as well. There are many really aggressive songs, but that are more about being pissed that your girl just left you, as opposed to being pissed politically or generally pissed at the state of this sorry world. I originally had 51 songs, but tried to weed out any band that was listed twice (though some remain), and some that didn't quite live up to the standard I was trying to set.
Of course, I'm sure I missed some -- like most of the punk and black metal scene -- but these are all songs that are in my collection.
Clicking the links will take you to the lyrics, but lyrics don't give you the full effect. You need to hear the songs to do them justice. I encourage you to track them down. If anyone wants a CD of this, in whatever format, send me $5 and I'll make it and send it. Just don't tell the FBI.
