A couple of posters have castigated those Democrats who voted for C. Rice as SoS. Now, I know all the arguments against her, prinicipally that she's completely incompetent, but let's face it: trying to find competence in the Bush administration is like trying to find virginity at a hooker convention; even if it's there, it won't last long.
So, we have another useless cabinet secretary, another SoS who will be rolled by every other foreign minister on the planet (Hello, Joschka) but it won't really much matter. It's hardly a change from before. In the end, I can't hold the votes of Democrats who voted for her against them; all I can do is praise those 13 who did vote against her. And to them I say: Thank you, you're a credit to your party and your country.
Gonzales, on the other hand, is a completely different kettle of fish.
More after the jump.
Hunter says it so eloquently that I'm not even going to bother to lay out the case. Where Rice is venial, Gonzales is venal. And I wish that the following story would appear in every newspaper in the country after the vote for him:
Senator Belfy votes for torture
By Shoe Burd
Washington - Today in the senate, Sen. Belfry voted to confirm Alberto Gonzales as the next Attorney General. In doing so, he gave his vote to the man whose briefs provide the legal underpinnings for the torture and abuse that occurred at Abu Ghraib and Guantanomo.
"Thanks for voting for me" a grinning Gonzales said after the vote. "Much like Bush's election victory validated every one of his policies, you have given me the validation that every brief I wrote for the president is correct."
A few Democrats had something to say, as well, but will be ignored here other than to mention them to show that this is not a biased article.
Any senator who votes for Gonzales deserves nothing less. And deserves this vote to be thrown in their face for the rest of their career. Sadly, we have sunk to the point where not only incompetence is shrugged off (see above), but true evil is considered acceptable.
