Hip hop fans in particular will feel this, but I'm guessing most Kossaks will be nodding their heads in appreciation to this fine piece of resistance art.
Iron Sheik, one of the authors of this ballad to our beloved NeoCons, is an Arab American hip hop artist on the frontlines of the fight for social justice. In describing his name, the Sheik explains:
"The Iron Sheik was a professional wrestling character who served as the stereotypical middle eastern villain. He wore a head dress, flowing robes, and the curly Arabian Nights shoes. Growing up, he was a powerful icon that taught me that Middle Easterners are the bad guys, and to be Arab is to be evil. Now that I know about the power of stereotypes and the ignorance behind them, I want to re-claim that moniker and re-define it in an empowering way. In short, my name is in itself political commentary about the misrepresentation of Arabs in the popular media, and what we as Arab-Americans can do -- re-define ourselves."
The struggle against aggression and coercion manifests in many forms, and art has and continues to be one of its most powerful incarnations. The elite in our society have institutional memory and have learned some important lessons from the 60s and 70s. Modern corporate music and radio has been quite successfull in crushing dissent and keeping voices of resistance out of record stores and off the radio air waves. But artists like Iron Sheik and many others are still riding the currents of the underground, spreading that NeoCon Luv one community at a time.
