Russ Feingold is the most principled person in the Unite States Senate. Not coincidentally, he is also one of the most progressive. But he needs a running mate of the most inimate sort.
I don't think it's a big deal that Sen. Feingold is twice divorced. The Republicans happily nominated Ronald Reagan and Bob Dole. True they were only divorced once a piece, but they came out of the "traditional values" party. (Ha-ha.)
What I do think could be a probelm for Russ is that he is presently unmarried. I think a lot of voters, particularly women who don't spend their free time on political blogs, tend to give real weight to a man's spouse. The character and personality of the wife reflect on the candidate.
And nothing reflects more poorly than no spouse at all. We'v only had one bachelor president and it just so happens that he was one of the 2 or 3 worst....presidents....ever. (He was James Buchanan, by the way.)
Howard Dean made a big mistake by not campaigning with Mrs/Doctor Dean. John Kerry was probably hurt by the fact that his wife was just not likeable.
Spouses matter. So we need to play match-maker for our man in Wisconsin. I think any of these choices would help him get the nomination. What do you think?
