This is just a quick question to poll our population. This partisan polarization thing, if it continues to the end, would lead to a 50% versus 50% government. Which means that the Republican government would presumably be attempting to represent its 50%.
And as has been argued recently, the way to combat that is to make our 50% powerful enough to combat theirs.
So, what then? What kind of government do you want? Do you want our government to be a bit more ideologically pure and represent only our 50%? Or more consensus-minded and represent a greater percentage? Or an even smaller percentage, if we can manage to gain power through subterfuge?
Take the poll.
I'll just admit here that I believe that quite a few people here are just in politics for revenge, wanting a government that only represents interests shared by 20-30% of our population. But I'm curious how the poll shakes out.
I don't mean to imply any false choices here - YES, I do understand that the majority of the nation is actually more progressive than our government. So just go by your own understanding of what beliefs are only held by a minority of the country.
I personally believe a President has a duty to represent 60-80% of the nation. I'm voting for 70%. I don't think that means abdicating principles by definition. Some people do, but I tend to find them not very thoughtful.
