Hillary Clinton is right on cue. The focus groups are now complete. Murtha's comments have had some time to sink in. Some of the big players have come out and laid down their cards. Now is the time for Hillary to get up and throw her two cents in to burnish her conservative credentials; you know, innoculate against all the upcoming hoardes of Republicans screaming "liberal, liberal!" for the 2008 Presidential elections.
Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and the House GOP? They're all pushing as hard as possible on the "immediate withdrawal" frame. Hillary Clinton just joined their team.
Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Jean Schmidt: our hero Jack Murtha is making "a big mistake."
I just read an
amazing piece the other day by Hilzoy over at Obsidian Wings. The piece happened to be a direct response to one of the tacitus regulars who penned something entitled,
Murtha is a Loser-Defeatist Hilzoy's piece was an absolute smackdown of the aforementioned smear job, but it was also much more than that: It elucidated in a very powerful way
why we are in such a mess in Iraq. You should all read the piece, but here's the main thesis: George W. Bush didn't really care enough to plan for victory.
Which leads me to wonder why on earth anyone would listen to anything Hillary has to say anymore. It is quite clear that Hillary has one core passion that is near and dear to her heart: the 2008 presidential election. Every other concern of governance for her, is either an inconvenience or a tool to use to further this one core ambition. Hillary doesn't really care anymore about getting our troops home than she did for casting the best vote for the American people in the Iraq resolution. Well, I'm sure that on some level she does care somewhat, after all she is human and I'm sure she is a very nice and thoughtful person when her precious isn't constantly on her mind, but her ambition and the lust of the presidency has made all of that take a backseat.
That is why I can't stand Hillary Clinton. She has become a caricature to me. Her positions, motivations and actions are all so transparently choreographed that I feel at times like I'm watching Gollum up on the big screen. It is painful.
The precious has ahold of her and its grip is just too powerful.
