I walked past a picket line today and stopped briefly to cheer on the strikers [Coalition of University Employees, cueunion.org] That got me thinking about how the Repugs engage in class warfare.
It is a common Repug tactic to try to break up the working class and turn one segment against another. Do some people have the right to take breaks? Have a defined benefit plan? Paid holidays? Stir up envy against these people! (especially if they are government employees)
Is there a program to try to redress not quite so past inequities? Stir up envy against these people!
Everyone deserves a decent pension plan, health insurance and a family wage. The sad truth is that most American workers have none of these things,
and no job security besides. This situation should
make people want to form and join unions. Instead,
Repugs clamor that union members are "lazy" and "overpaid." What is sad is that too many believe them.
