When I first heard about this story, I thought it was too unbelievable to be true.
Maine State Representative Brian Duprey is the sponsor of legislation entitled, "An Act To Protect Homosexuals from Discrimination" Sounds good enough.
Let's look further, here's the
summary of the bill:
This bill prohibits an abortion when the reason for the termination of the pregnancy is the projected sexual orientation of the fetus after it is born. The projected sexual orientation would be determined by analysis of the genetic materials of the fetus in which the projected sexual orientation is identified through the presence or absence of a so-called "homosexual gene."
Hmm.. And where did this Republican legislator, who's not a supporter of gay rights, get this idea?
Why Rush Limbaugh of course!
From 365gay:
The conservative Republican lawmaker emphasizes he is no supporter of gay rights. His bill is a reflection of his views on abortion.
Duprey says that the law is intended to take into account that someday scientists may find the gene that results in homosexuality.
"I have heard from women who told me that if they found out that they were carrying a child with the gay gene, then they would abort. I think this is wrong," Duprey told the Press Herald newspaper.
He says that he got the idea while listening to The Rush Limbaugh Show.
Of course, the loaded question.. is this bill such a bad idea?
