Greetings and salutations, kossacks far and wide (geographically
speaking!) Welcome to this week's NLF! I don't know about you, but I worked my hiney off this week. It's true, I typed this standing up because I am hineyless. And it truly sucks when your job cuts into your blogging time, doesn't it? I only got to do two regular entries(
Revelry) in
Cheers and Jeers (huzzahs: BillinPortlandMaine and the gang who keep the spirit of DKos lively day in and day out!) and my usual planning for NLF had to wait til the last minute. (The last minute for a Capricorn is at least 24 hours before...lol). Special kudos to the light of my life,
Tempest for getting the laundry done so I could do this instead. You rock, baby!
So with clothes hung up, towels folded, and lint screens clear, The NLF begins in the tumble dry low world of the extended entry!
As usual in the NLF, newbies, lurkers (dark glasses optional), and veteran kossacks of all UID ages can ask questions, share information, say hello, relax and pop open a cold one (bring enough to share!) and open up in general. You may get answers in here from anyone (I may even know, it's happened..well a few times) or not, but so far we have been at least able to point the questioner in a reasonable proximity of the right direction.
And also as usual, I try to come up with something to share in what I have decided to call Center Stage. If in your questions, you'd like to see something take Center Stage in a future NLF, don't be shy, say so!
Center Stage this week: Cable News. IMHO (in my humble opinion...by the way, if you haven't checked out the Dkosopedia for abbreviation meanings, it really helps!) Cable news, or as I like to refer to it "Cable Showcase" is the unsightly rash that has spread over television.
It sucks. Witness the most recent necrophiliac coverage of the late Terri Schiavo and Pope John Paul II, for example. I even briefly stopped watching the only cable news show I can stand, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, because it got so completely devoid of any actual news content, especially when the Pontiff died. I thought both deaths were very sad, and Schiavo's tragic, but it really brought home to me how much Cable Showcase had become infotainment rather than a place to find real news.
Thank the powers of the universe we have the Blogs. Right here on DailyKos stories from all parts of the country are covered, with the insights of a talented array of Kossacks. And DKos gets information from other bloggers on other blogs, as well. (This is not to say that nothing newsworthy is ever culled from cable, but for me personally, I'd rather link to it on here than risk throwing a brick through my TV when Wolf Blitzer or Judy Woodruff says something particularly atrocious.)
Some of the blogs I have checked out in my few months on DailyKos:
MyDD You'll see it listed on the front page of DKos.
AmericaBlog
quoted regularly here, and who's banner line, "a great nation deserves
the truth" says it all.
Booman Tribune features many Kossack you may recognize from DKos and Cheers & Jeers, such as
Maryscott O'Connor, Pastordan, and Carnacki.
Pam's House Blend also by a resident Kossack, pamindurham, has topics and insights for everyone, but especially the GLBT community.
These are just a few. When you check out the writings here on DKos, and
another blog is credited for a story or a viewpoint, check 'em out! It
may just save your TV screen.
Alrighty then...5, 4, 3, 2, 1...Forum Away Everyone!
