This has been diaried already, but I thought I'd drop an update for anyone who missed it. The
East Bay Kossacks Meetup group is in its death throes, and we've begun to move on.
You see, whoever first organized the East Bay Kossacks group has kinda disappeared. Since there is no longer an official "Organizer," the board is closed until someone steps up to fill the void. I am not that someone. Sorry. Don't have the $20/month to spare.
More below the fold.
So a while back, someone smart (Navajo) saw this coming and set up the
San Francisco Kossacks Yahoo!Group. There was some miscommunication when it first went down, and apparently not everybody saw the
diary he posted in time. He tried to change the location of the meetup that was to happen that day, and got a couple people to show. A couple people also went to the previously arranged location, and may not have yet heard about the change.
So I was disappointed at my inability to attend, and at the turnout (given that our East Bay meetups had between 7 and 13 people in attendance), but I posted the following at the Meetup site to try and let people know.
I, as it turned out, was unable to make it to the most recent meetup. The reason for this is that I was told that since no official location was chosen (how do we do that, by the way?) and since Meetup.com is soon going to start charging for use of its site (I had been unaware of that, and still am not certain its true), that a) the meetup was going to be in the City that night, and b) that the organizing site was going to be a Yahoo!Group instead of this site.
A diary was posted on this. They got like 2 people to show up there.
This is the Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SanFranciscoKossacks/
So anyway, they seem to be running a poll on when is the best time to meet next, and we've been talking there about rotating the location through all the major alternatives (peninsula, City, EB, NB, etc) based on how many people are where (i.e. responses to the poll).
On the one hand, I feel like our meetup site was kinda hijacked, and on the other hand, I think the other site is a little better organized. And the hijacked feeling is further dissipated by the guy who started the Yahoo!Group making everyone who signs up a moderator so they can modify the database with their own location information. I think, despite not liking how quickly it went down, that we may be better off at the other site, and more people would get into it because it rotates location and chooses a time based on responses to a poll.
Your thoughts?
I now, of course know that they ARE charging, but I think its only whoever might want to take up the role of Organizer. The hijacked feeling has since completely faded, and all I feel now is nostalgia.
I figure we're probably better off with the Yahoo!Group than the meetup page, but I want to make sure we get all the same people to come. We had a nice group going at the meetup page, and faces had become familiar. My wife and I miss you guys and want to see you all again.
So come join up, and we'll see each other at the next one. Or the one after that. Maybe we can even pull one back to Jupiter in Berkeley, for old time's sake.
