I was pleased to see this and hadn't seen mention of it in the past 100+ diaries, so here's an encouraging development for your holiday weekend enjoyment:
Al Neuharth is the founder of USA Today, "America's Best Selling Newspaper." In his regular Friday column yesterday, he compared Bush to Lyndon Johnson during the Vietnam war, saying "The most important similarity between Iraq and Vietnam is that both Democratic and Republican presidents lied to us in wartime."
Hey, that's a pretty out-there use of the "L" word in a major mainstream paper!
I learned about the editorial here in The Editor and Publisher, a journal about media for journalists.
Al's rather scathing editorial is
here and also contains this zinger:
The crucial difference between Vietnam and Iraq is that there is no Cronkite to call Bush's bluff. Without a strong, trusted, non-political voice, too many of us remain Bush-blinded. Bush tried keeping the wool over our eyes again Tuesday on national TV by repeatedly tying Iraq to 9/11. That charge is as phony as his discredited prewar claim that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.
This guy is a veteran of WWII with a Bronze Star on his wall. He's not what you could call a typical "Bush lied!" screamer. (Not that there's anything wrong with screaming these days!!) The country is a little slow, but not completely stupid.
The tide is turning. . . finally. What say you?
