OK so I'm sitting here waxing philosophical about whats going on with this crazy world and images are just flashing by, Cindy's heroic vigil, Chimp on a Bike, bombings in Iraq and all of my sudden my mind transports me back to the 60's.
Now I was in elementary school during the 60's so while I remember the VietNam war I was not really interested in what was going on, I cared more about the next Lost in Space episode. I did remember a song that has always stuck in the back of my mind, something about a woman wanting to deploy to war with her man. Anyway I was sitting here trying to remember the lyrics and just a few words come to me
I want to be with him, it grieves my heart so
Thanks to google I did find the song, its "Cruel War" by Peter Paul and Mary. As we send our love ones off to fight I think the song is appropriate. Does anyone else remember this. The lyrics are below the fold. Itunes has 4 renditions by different artists.
The cruel war is raging, johnny has to fight
I want to be with him from morning to night.
I want to be with him, it grieves my heart so,
Won't you let me go with you?
No, my love, no.
Tomorrow is sunday, monday is the day
That your captain will call you and you must obey.
Your captain will call you it grieves my heart so,
Won't you let me go with you?
No, my love, no.
I'll tie back my hair, men's clothing I'll put on,
I'll pass as your comrade, as we march along.
I'll pass as your comrade, no one will ever know.
Won't you let me go with you?
No, my love, no.
Oh johnny, oh johnny, I fear you are unkind
I love you far better than all of mankind.
I love you far better than words can e're express
Won't you let me go with you?
Yes, my love, yes.
Yes, my love, yes.
