In Jerome a Paris' recent diary, he mentioned the "Pledge Card" from Britain. The "Pledge Card" was a simple set of six statements that reflected a political party's vision for the country, all on a credit card-sized card.
I think that forming a set of Pledge Card statements for the Democratic party, or what we would like them to be, anyway, would be a worthy exercise.
Below the fold, I've taken a stab at the Pledge Card. What do you think? How would yours be different? What would your Pledge Card look like?
- Health care for all. By providing all US Citizens with a health plan through Medicaid, we can cut the out-of-control health care costs that are hurting American families and businesses.
- Invest in clean energy. By developing a state-of-the-art renewable energy sector in the US, we can create jobs, effectively compete in the global economy, strengthen our national security, and protect our air and water for our grandchildren.
- Improve education. By reducing class sizes, investing in teacher training, and maintaining school buildings, we can help ensure a brighter future for American children, and a well-educated and inventive workforce for the US economy.
- Prioritize. To pay for investments in health care, clean energy, and education, we must make smart choices about the country's priorities. Tax cuts for the super-rich and unnecessary, expensive wars are not good for American families and businesses. We should reform the tax code so that everyone pays their fair share, and focus our national defense strategy on preventing terrorism, not occupying countries and enriching well-connected defense contractors.
- Right to privacy. Americans have always cherished our right to privacy, whether from our neighbors, our businesses, or our government. This right is enshrined in our Constitution and judicial tradition. Americans' right to privacy is fundamental, and must be protected from intrusive government and intrusive corporations.
