Mohammad overwhelmed by fundamentalists
"It's tough being loved by jerks"
I was waiting for le Canard Enchainé's take on the cartoon story, given that that paper, a very famous (and highly respected) political and satirical weekly, publishes every Wednesday the best political cartoons around AND that they are strongly secular / anti-clerical, and I was not disappointed.
This first one above is actually from the cover of Charlie-Hebdo, another satirical paper whose motto "journal bête et méchant" (nasty and silly paper) says it all (it has been banned a number of times in its 40-year existence). It decided to re-publish the infamous 12 cartoons this week, after a favorable court decision. The one above is by cabu, the most amazing cartoonist I've ever seen (the likeness of faces to actual people is amazing), who publishes on both papers and also on http://www.scorbut.be. All others from Le Canard (you can take a peek at their front page.)
the Mermaid as per the islamists
writers' block
"now don't go start a world war"
The old crusaders have no energy left.
"we don't burn embassies, we burn candles"
It's forbidden to represent Mahomet's face. But what about his foot?
Tension in the Middle East
"You're watching porn again!"
"yeah, but it's not Danish"
And the conclusion:
The future is bleak for newspapers
"We can't make fun of the prophet, the pope, Corsicans, cops. Who are we going to make fun of?"
"Us"
A small detour via Spain, with this one from El Jueves
:
We were going to draw Muhammad, but we shat in out pants
"Muhammad?"
"No Muhammad here"
"Move on"
As the headline in Le Canard Encahiné says, fundamentalists are fighting for the freedom to oppress:
"You mix up everything - the spiritual and the temporal"
"I know the difference"
"On religious grounds, these cartoons offend me"
"On political grounds, they make my day."
