I must admit that I never thought I would write a diary about Bob Casey, who is running for the Senate from PA against Rick Santorum. I am supporting Bob Casey because he is a Democrat, and a big improvement over Santorum - but I will always be disappointed that Casey will not support some of the issues that are important to me.
I don't know much about Bob Casey except what I have read so far. So I was surprised when I read this about
Casey looking for votes in conservative Amish country. Really? My understanding is that there would be little support for a Democrat in this conservative Lancaster area. (via www.keystonepolitics.com)
"I think it's very important for me to begin at least a dialogue with voters in parts of the state where I might not get their vote," Casey said in an interview. "I think it's a sign of respect for people. ... Even those who don't vote for you are entitled to the kind of respect you should show during a campaign."
Showing respect to all voters in a political campaign. So that pretty much means that shutting out voters in republican-friendly-only campaigning is then defined as disrespectful to people. What a concept.
Nevin Dourte, 49, of Manheim, challenged Casey during the question-and-answer session to not be a politician who says things just to get elected.
"Are you willing to pledge to us today that if you are put into office, that you will support and work for the best interests of the state regardless of what that does to your re-election?" Dourte asked.
Unflustered, Casey said yes. He said it's a matter of character and accountability.
"Thank you for the question, and also for putting me on the spot publicly, because now I've got to hold my end of the bargain," Casey said.
He said yes, he will work for the best interests of the state, that its about character and accountability. Would Rick Santorum say that?
So Bob Casey surprised me today as I read that. Maybe its because we infrequently hear about character and accountability from our politicians today. I know it could be just a campaign promise to get elected, but I'm hoping not. I am hoping that Bob Casey stands by what he said.
