In a move that shows that the GOP may be giving up on the Senate Race in Ohio, the NRSC has announced that it is pulling its funding from the race.
Both The Columbus Dispatch and The Toledo Blade have recently had stories in which the NRSC has announced it is pulling its support from Ohio incumbent senatorMike Dewine. This is taken by most observers (myself included) as a sign that the GOP sees the race as a likely loss
So what does this mean? Well, it could be a tactic, whereby the NRSC forgets about the race in the hope that the DSCC also ignores it, thereby allowing them to swoop in at the last minute with a huge ad blitz.
I sincerely doubt it, though. I don't think the NRSC, in the current climate, has the time or resources to devote to such a misguided Machiavelian scheme. They are hemorrhaging money and support in several key races that were once safe, and have other things to worry about.
And what does this mean to Ohio? Well, for one thing, we may see less of those annoying ads that contain that silly sad-sounding guitar refrain and the distorted black and white pictures, and less of the "Sherrod Brown let us Down" sound byte that has been repeated ad nauseaum.
And it may also mean that the steady barrage of negative ads from both sides may decrease somewhat. Elections have been getting progressively nastier ever since 2000, and this year is no different. People are getting sick of them.
