As we come to the final stretch of this election cycle, I get a sense of complacency from my fellow Kossacks, and it concerns me. People, this election is not won yet. The polls look good, but there are so many close races, that if we get complacent, we could lose.
All my life, I've paid attention to politics. I'm sure most of you would agree, it's an addiction. I married fairly young (22) and started a family. Staying at home with young children, I still managed to read as much as I could, and always always voted, making sure I knew what the candidates stood for. It seemed enough to me, and I thought of myself as a good citizen.
I voted for Reagan the first time he ran, and I remember my grandfather telling me I'd live to regret that vote. Boy, was he right! Although I'd thought of the Democrat's welfare policies as being a utter social failure, Reagan had given voice to the 'Moral Majority', an oxymoron if there ever was one, and given them a seat at that 'big tent'. We've seen since then what that marriage of convenience has wrought. For women, for minorities, for gays, for anyone who didn't fit that Republican stereotype of 'white male power'.
Ever since then, I've donated money to politicians, in the hope that we could stem the tide of the Republican agenda. We've seen, that isn't enough to counter the fearmongering, the marriage of business and politics that has been the ruination of our country, of our real values, our middle class, and our constitution.
This time, I gave money. Then I gave money again. And again. I gave until it hurt. And if I have any other free pennies, I'll give again.
That was not enough. I've volunteered this time. I will be a driver on election day for Joe Sestak. It'll kill me not being online, with you guys and my other friends, watching the returns minute by minute. But, drive I will, because just giving money isn't enough, not with what is at stake. Not with so many races being so close.
I'm making phone calls. I spent several hours making calls to Republicans, and found that at least half of them plan on voting for Sestak. I plan on manning phones as much as I can in the next two weeks.
Think about if Bush gets to name another Supreme Court Justice. Do YOU want another Alito? That right there should be enough to send us all running to the checkbook! Think about another Bolton coming up for vote. It's the Senate that approves nominations, which in my book makes it key in this election, with this president.
Just think, if we all give that last push, we could end up with the House and the Senate. It's that close. Ford, McGaskill, Tester, Webb, Lamont, Brown. Sooooo close. Santorum? I don't want him to lose a close one, I want to bury him.
My dear fellow Kossacks, don't be complacent. Let's bury them all.
I smell it, a rout.
