I'd have tried to run it by you guys first, but I wanted my response to be 'organic'. I'm a Navy veteran, Western Dem from rural Oregon, trying to see if I can bring some of that mojo to the mid-South.
All below the fold.
Since the recent elections, many have witnessed Republicans and their puppets touting the Democratic takeover of Congress as a victory for conservatism. It sounds ridiculous, but it's true. One such is example is the editorial in the 11/15 edition of the Kernel, written by Rush Limbaugh-wannabe Wes Blevins. Blevins argues that some if not many of the victorious Democrats can attribute their victories on 11/7 to what may appear to be their moderate or even conservative ideology. But the truth is not as simple as Blevins needs it to be.
Some examples that Blevins trots out are Senators-elect Jon Tester, Bob Casey Jr. and Jim Webb. Tester, an organic grain farmer from Montana, sports a flat-top haircut and is does not believe in gun control due to the low rate of gun crime in Montana. He is, however, pro-choice, populist and pro-environment. Casey is pro-life and pro-gun rights Dem from Pennsylvannia, but he is also a populist who is a supporter of a stronger middle-class. Webb is a Virginian, a former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan and a Vietnam war hero who is pro-gun rights. He is also a pro-choice libertarian populist who felt that the Republican Party had left moderate, pragmatic Southerners behind. In these cases and many others, the liberal/conservative labels are outdated, no matter how much Blevins and the Republicans have tried to apply them.
In America we will once again enter a period of balanced government. Perhaps this would be a good time for all of America to celebrate our unity as a nation, rather than bicker over our differences. I suggest that students at UK disregard the commentary of those such as Wes Blevins, who preach bitter, divisive partisanship and intolerance for other viewpoints. We can do better than that.
