then the terrorists win!
This is the crazy-ass email I received tonight from the AFA. I somehow got on their email list a while back and I haven't unsubscribed because they crack me so consistently up. It's also a good reminder of what to write my elected representatives about (anything opposite of what AFA is urging) or what to write a company about (no, Ford, I'm not boycotting you because you support gay organizations--I just don't like your shitty vehicles).
Anyway, AFA forwards me a column from TownHall.com (I shan't be providing links for these onerous folks--you can google if you must) by Dennis Prager--a Jew, they point out--concerning Keith Ellison's plans to take his oath of office on a koran rather than a Christian bible. This simple act, I'm told, undermines American civilization!
First, it is an act of hubris that perfectly exemplifies multiculturalist activism -- my culture trumps America's culture. What Ellison and his Muslim and leftist supporters are saying is that it is of no consequence what America holds as its holiest book; all that matters is what any individual holds to be his holiest book.
America--this means you and me--holds the King James to be our most holiest book! If that isn't enough, imagine a racist elected to office--Mr. Prager did. He sees a day when such a person might want to swear his or her oath on a copy of Mein Kampf. Quelle Horreur! Of course, you know what this will lead to, don't you? Just as in the fertile imagination of Santorum where gay marriage leads to hot box turtle sex, Mr. Prager sees this leading to Mormons wanting to use the Book of Mormon, Scientologists placing their hand on a copy of Dianetics and liberals swearing on a stack of New York Times editorials. Think of the children er, our national unity! It's the end of the world as we know it! Why, oh why, is this being allowed to happen?!
The answer is obvious -- Ellison is a Muslim. And whoever decides these matters, not to mention virtually every editorial page in America, is not going to offend a Muslim. In fact, many of these people argue it will be a good thing because Muslims around the world will see what an open society America is and how much Americans honor Muslims and the Koran.
This argument appeals to all those who believe that one of the greatest goals of America is to be loved by the world, and especially by Muslims because then fewer Muslims will hate us (and therefore fewer will bomb us).
Geez, this reminds me of my brother who always got things his own way while I had to suck it up. But you'd think fewer bombs would be a good thing, wouldn't you? Mr. Prager chides your naivete. This bomb-free future will only enrage the Islamists because they hate our freedom, especially bomb-freedom. If Mr. Ellison is allowed to go through with this one act, he will be doing more damage to America than 9-11. That's right! Using a koran, which he believes in, rather than a bible, which I would assume he finds somewhat flawed because wikipedia told me so, to swear his oath of office is worse than 2+ buildings falling over in the center of a major metropolitan area, four hijacked airplanes being crashed, and one large governmental building getting a hole ripped through it plus 3000 people dying and some other icky junk.
I feel so much more informed now, having scrolled down through Mr. Prager's erudite and incisive commentary. Perhaps I really should send an email asking my U.S. Representative and Senators to pass a law making the Bible the book used in the swearing-in ceremony of Representatives and Senators, as AFA asks me to do. Maybe I ought to forward the plea on to family and friends. And for their very worthy efforts, maybe I should send a small gift of support to the AFA, as they always ask me to do, for alerting me to this. Maybe a fruitcake...'tis the season!
UPDATE: I don't diary a lot so even though I felt this was a bit of a toss-off, I didn't feel too bad about adding it to the slew. The posters, though, elevated this diary and made it worthwhile. Thank you! I want to add a posted link, The Mahablog where all of Prager's fallacies and just utter wrongness are pointed out. Thanks, all!
