Instead of a Tour of NC this Sunday, I thought instead I would provide a forum for all to put it on the table. What is on your Wish List?
A big change is what I would like to see, no more of the Rubber Stamping that allows the Bush Administration to slash and burn our Constitution and our Civil Liberties. I want Checks and Balances back, I want all Americans allowed a voice, not just those with the most money.
Here in North Carolina, I'd like more people to understand exactly where the budget surplus went in the last session. Too many Republicans would have you believe that it was spent up. The truth of the matter is that it was not.....
( from NC Policy Watch - Chris Fitzsimon ) In fact, more than a third of it was not spent and instead paid for $200 million in tax cuts, a $325 million deposit in the state's rainy day fund, and an allocation of $225 million into a fund that will be used to pay to repair and renovate state buildings.
Seems like good fiscal conservation, so stop with the false labeling, tax and spend is a bit of a stretch these days.
Another fallocy of the conservatives is that the liberals impede job growth in North Carolina by over taxing businesses and I say "Buffallo Chips" to that. Here is a link to the Employment Security Commission and their NC Occupational Trends thru the Labor Market Information (LMI) Division. It charts 'Employment By Major Industry Groups in 2002 and Projected to 2012'. The three sectors of this Labor Market that will be suffering are: Goods-Producing, Manufacturing and Natural Resources and Miining. Need I remind anyone of either NAFTA or CAFTA? However every other sector will see considerable growth based on what is now occuring.
Last, remember the Iraq War. We are in a Quagmire, plain and simple. We have no exit strategy, and I wonder what we are doing there. Even the Pentagonnow admits that "Iraq Is Close To Chaos" and that the situation there is "rapidly deteriorating" As of November 3, 2006, there have been 2,829 American deaths in Iraq, for what? (I understand that the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Times will be asking for Rumsfeld's resignation tomorrow!)
To end my 2006 Mid Term Election wish list, I leave you with a quote from a speech made by Dick Cheney in 1991,
I think that the proposition of going to Baghdad is also fallacious. I think if we were going to remove Saddam Hussein we would have had to go all the way to Baghdad, we would have to commit a lot of force because I do not believe he would wait in the Presidential Palace for us to arrive. I think we'd have had to hunt him down. And once we'd done that and we'd gotten rid of Saddam Hussein and his government, then we'd have had to put another government in its place.
What kind of government? Should it be a Sunni government or Shi'i government or a Kurdish government or Ba'athist regime? Or maybe we want to bring in some of the Islamic fundamentalists? How long would we have had to stay in Baghdad to keep that government in place? What would happen to the government once U.S. forces withdrew? How many casualties should the United States accept in that effort to try to create clarity and stability in a situation that is inherently unstable?
I think it is vitally important for a President to know when to use military force. I think it is also very important for him to know when not to commit U.S. military force. And it's my view that the President got it right both times, that it would have been a mistake for us to get bogged down in the quagmire inside Iraq. -- Dick Cheney 4/29/1991
